There are plenty of ways to increase the value of your home, but none gives you the most bang for your buck as laying ceramic tile. Unfortuantely for most people, the thought of laying ceramic tile in their home imediately brings images of high installation bills to mind. But don't panic. You can install ceramic tile in your home for a fraction of the cost that most people will pay.

If you have never laid tile before, then I recommend that you do a little research first. Read a few articles and pick up how to lay tile video to watch. The easiest tile to install is floor tile. Try a countertop or small room first. The amount of tile will be small and you will get some practice before tackling a larger area, such as a kitchen. The most difficult part of the process will be taking out the plumbing fixtures.

Watch the video, decide on the room that you are going to lay tile in, and then visit the store. The tools and supplies will now seem familiar to you. Look over the tiles and the tools. Do not go overboard. In fact, you should not buy anything on your first trip. Talk to the salesman about the types of tile you are considering.

Choose your tile carefully. Make sure that you are choosing floor tile, which is skid-resistant, rather high-gloss wall tile. The salesperson at the home improvement or tile store can help you make the right choice for your room. I usually take a few sample tiles home to see how they look in the light of the room where I am going to install the tile. Just like paint and carpet, ceramic tile looks different at home than it does in the store. Consider the color of grout that will compliment your tile. Once you have decided on a tile, take careful measurements of the room and return to the store. Order your tile and prepare to get to work!

Set aside enough time to finish laying your tile within a few days. A bathroom floor should take no more than a weekend if you prep Friday night, lay the tile Saturday and grout it on Sunday. Larger rooms may take a little longer. And your first project will take longer than you think, so plan accordingly.

Once the ceramic tile floor has been laid, you will be thrilled. Your bathroom will have a whole new look and the value of your home will have increased. After a few weeks, take a very close look at your work. Make some notes about things that gave you trouble or things that you would do differently next time. Once you know it is securely turned off then you can take off the current fixture and remove the wires, keep the exposed bits away from each other.

2. Put the live bit into the track and tighten the setscrew. Put the end on mounting bracket. Use the pigtail leads to complete the wiring process. These pigtail leads is what the small wires that connect to the terminal are called. Wire nuts can be used to put the pigtail leads with the wiring. Put the black one onto the brass screw and the white one with the silver screw. The bare one should go to the green screw.

3. Decide on where to put the track. You can decide by seeing where the junction box is and where you want the light to hit. You can also buy Ts or angles but make sure the fittings you need are available by the company that has made your track lights. Mark the holes to note the spot. Make sure they are parallel to your wall by measuring correctly. Put them away from anything that could cause a fire. On the noted spots then put the drill holes.

4. Put the track up. Make sure the wires in the junction box and then snap it in place. Put the screws in place and then put the track up to the ceiling.

5. Put any extra sections of track lighting up and also put the end of the track in place. Put the electric adapter into your tract and screw it in place.

6. Put in the bulbs and you are almost ready to go. Make sure the wiring is all connected and the put the plate over the box and tighten everything.

Just turn on your power and aim your light anywhere in the room you want it! You'll have beautiful lighting in your home!

Think outside the box of "a Potted Plant." 2. Selection of plants - People often fret over which plants go with which plants and you should give this no thought at all. Select an odd number of plants such as 3, 5 or 7 and select them with a variety of leaf shapes. Some should have slender stalks and others should have round and full leaves. Try to vary the color of the plants too. As you are browsing for your plants place them side by side to see what they will look like in an arrangement. Does it look attractive? Do the plants compliment each other. Move the pots around and look for attractive arrangements.

Materials to Purchase

1. The container 2. 3,5,or 7 plants (this odd numbered arrangement tends to be more interesting than even numbered arrangements) 3. 1 bag of potting soil 4. 1 small bag of stones for the bottom of the terrarium (You can pick small stones the size of marbles from your backyard and save a bit of money here)

Making the Terrarium (The Steps)

1. Put a one inch layer of stones in the bottom of your terrarium 2. Fill the container about half full of potting soil 3. Remove the plants from their plastic pots and arrange them in your terrarium. Move this arrangement around looking for something that pleases you. 4. Once you have found an arrangement you like fill the rest of the container with potting soil and gently tap it down so it is firm and the plants are supported. 5. Water with a moderate amount of water. 6. Put the terrarium in a place with moderate or occasional sunlight

Caring for your terrarium

A terrarium is really easy to care for. Check on it every day and stick your finger in the soil. If it is dry then water it. Examine the bottom of the terrarium. If there is water among the stones then you should not water it for a few days.

Want your terrarium to last longer and be even hardier?

You can add a step to this whole process. When at the Store purchase a bag of something called Spaghnum Moss, (Or Spanish Moss) This is a stringy material. After you put your drainage rocks in the terrarium put a one-inch thick layer of the moss as if it were a carpet covering the rocks. Then add your soil. What this does is prevent the soil from slowly over time draining down into the rocks. It will keep the roots of your plants drier and healthier.

If you choose a really dramatic container and choose an attractive set of plants you can make a beautiful terrarium in one hour. And it is something you will really be proud of and other people will comment on how beautiful it is.

It is when something is actually wrong that we will finally go to take a look at it and realize that hey this could have been avoided if only we would have done some regular maintenance on them in the first place. As of late, news about the housing market is pretty much all over the map. No one really knows what is going to happen next, and everything is pretty much completely unpredictable.

Now that everyone has pretty much agreed upon the fact that the market is indeed slowing down, the next question on everyone's mind is whether we are going to see an improvement in the future, or if we are going to see some more slowing before things start to pick up again.

Well, all of the data that is coming in is making things even more confusing and difficult to predict.

The most recent data shows us a variety of mixed signals concerning the health and vitality of our nation's housing market.

The most recent data coming in shows us both good and bad news.

As for the good news, according to a major trade association, sales of existing homes increased last month. As for the bad news, new home sales slowed.

A February 28, 2007 article by RISMedia.com, "Existing-home sales improve in January," looks at the latest numbers that are coming in concerning our housing market. "Sales of existing homes rose in January, reaching the highest level in seven months, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Total existing-home sales-including single-family, town homes, condominiums and co-ops - increased 3.0 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate1 of 6.46 million units in January from an upwardly revised pace of 6.27 million in December. Sales were 4.3 percent below the 6.75 million-unit level in January 2006."

Although we are seeing improvements in the exiting home sales, which is definitely good news for the market, we shouldn't get our hopes up to high.

Things are improving here, but there are other aspects of the housing market that are still declining. And surprisingly enough, one of the housing industry's most influential figures is sighting the strange weather we have been seeing as reason for these unpredictable numbers. "David Lereah, NAR's chief economist, said observers shouldn't overreact to the sales gain, or to other short-term effects. 'Although we're expecting existing-home sales to gradually rise this year, and buyers are responding to the price correction, some unusually warm weather helped boost sales in January,' he said. 'On the flip side, the winter storms that disrupted so much of the country in February could negatively impact the housing market.'"

Although many housing markets were essentially shut down for a while in February due to the extreme whether conditions, things should continue to pick up shortly. Only time will tell what will happen to our market in the future.

If you find your condition does not clear up in a reasonable amount of time, you may want to consider using oral and topical antibiotics, if prescribed. The most common types of topical antibiotics used for the treatment of acne include salicylic acid, which cuts down the shedding of cells lining the follicles of the oil glands; tretinoin; adapalene; and tazarotene. You should see results within five to six weeks. If the condition worsens, your doctor will explain the more aggressive types of treatment available.

While there have been so many misconceptions about how to treat acne, one home treatment everyone does agree on is benzoyl peroxide. These are the most common topical medicines used to treat acne. Benzoyl peroxide is best at killing acne and may reduce oil production. Studies show, for some patients, over the counter medications may cause side effects. However, these side effects soon dissipate. Moreover, topical medications seem to help in treating acne when used on a regular basis. Most dermatologists agree it takes about 8 weeks or more before there is any noticeable improvement.

While acne can be a difficult condition to deal with, it can be treated and will eventually go away. Form babies to adults, acne conditions on harder to deal with for teens. However, if you follow some of these preventative measures, and include a healthy diet, chances are your acne will not progress any further.

Concrete has an interesting history. Evidence shows that the early Romans worked with concrete as early as 200 BC and as you might have already guessed, they used it to build their aqueducts and bridges.

In 1752, English engineer John Smeaton discovered how to make concrete waterproof and he used it to build the Eddystone lighthouse in England.

What Is Concrete?

Today, concrete is the most commonly used material in home improvement. Made from a mixture of sand, gravel, cement, and water, concrete is used to build things like walls, floors, and patio foundations. A special type of waterproof concrete is used for home improvement projects near water or an area that's exposed to moisture on a regular basis. A prime candidate for waterproof concrete work is a basement in the mid-west section of the country.

Concrete and Cement Are Not the Same

It's a common mistake, but many people call concrete, 'cement', when the two are very different. Cement is a powder made of a mixture of calcified limestone and clay, and it's used with water and sand or gravel to make concrete. Concrete - is made out of cement (and other things). Used interchangeably, most people understand that when we say that we need a cement job, we're actually referring to a concrete job.

Why We Build Things With Concrete

One reason is its strength. Concrete is famous for its ability to withstand heavy weight and pressure. That's why it's the most sensible choice for foundations that support homes or large quantities of water like swimming pools and the denser the concrete, the stronger it is. If you're experiencing cracked concrete, chances are it is the result of poor mixing - mixing with too much water that is.

Good strong concrete, such as that used to build a sturdy sidewalk or driveway for example, is mixed with just the right amount of water and is allowed to 'cure.' Concrete becomes stronger as long as it's allowed to sit and cure naturally without the use of artificial tools (fans, hot air, etc.). In fact, concrete is best cured by keeping it wet for a period of about three days.

In cold weather, contractors are careful not to let freshly laid concrete freeze by covering it with a tarp. But in areas where the weather is fiercely cold or in freezing temperatures, concrete is cured with hot air while still maintaining an appropriate amount of moisture.

Another reason why we use concrete is because it's inexpensive, it's elastic (at particular stages), and it will continue to harden even while wet. Better yet is its ease to work with. If the concrete is properly prepared (mixed correctly), it isn't difficult to manipulate.

From Pour to Finish

All in all, concrete will dry (cure) within a matter of days however if special agents, such as drying agents are mixed in with the concrete before it's poured, it could dry in as little as an hour. For maximum results, be sure to follow the instructions that your contractor gives you after getting a concrete job. There are just too many horror stories where customers were upset with the quality of a concrete job, only to find out that they were at fault for not following the contractor's care instructions!

Without proper preparation, your paint will run and you may have yellow streaks. You should use a good cleaner to eliminate the build-up on the paneling. Then, apply a gloss remover small sections and rub in the direction of the grain. The gloss remover should set for at least thirty minutes, after which time you should apply the primer. Do not remove the gloss remover. The primer should be reapplied if the paneling is still showing through after the first coat is dry. Once the primer has dried overnight, add the caulking into the panel grooves and remove excess caulking with a putty knife. Let the caulking dry overnight as well. In the morning, you will be ready to start painting your first coat of regular paint. Let the paint dry according to that brand's directions and apply a second coat if necessary.

A second option is to apply wallpaper that can be painted. This is a great way to give your home the appearance of a painted wall with the color of your choice. Apply a good degreaser to the paneling and let it dry. Once it is dry, you will need to fill in the panel grooves with caulking to give a smooth appearance and rid of any ridges. Use a putty knife to scrape away the excess caulk to provide the paper a smoother, firm surface to stick to. You must then apply a good primer to the surface. Of course, you must size the wallpaper to fit your walls and then hang the wallpaper according to the directions. You will then be ready to paint your wall, but be sure to follow the instructions from the manufacturer for painting wallpaper.

Finally, you can always add a shine to your paneling by glazing it. As above, you should first clean the paneling with a degreaser. You would then paint the paneling in a color of your choice and let it dry overnight. Next, mix a satin top color with a glaze according to the instructions to ensure you mix the correct proportions of both. You can the glaze mixture over the painted paneling, preferably one or two panels at a time. You can then wipe off any excess glaze depending on how much shine you prefer.

As a female in the home improvement field, I get asked questions differently than my male counterparts. Sometimes, guys come to me instead of other guys who do what I do. There is a reason for that and for now I'll give you one reason why.

One morning, I was into my second cup of coffee and catching some news in the background while browsing through a handful of mail. My phone rang a few times and I hollered at my secretary that I was busy. But, we have an informal work relationship and she told me that she was in the middle of something herself. So, I picked up the phone.

It was a guy on the phone who needed some home improvement advice. Well, that's what I do. So, he had called the right person. But, it seemed that it was hard for him to get the question out of his mouth. After several attempts, he had worded enough to say, "Can you come look at my house and I'll explain things there."

That's not a hard proposition. I met him a few hours later at his house. We walked through and my thought was, "There's nothing to this place." It was functional, totally utility. It had everything you need. Nothing you really want.

But, that's none of my business. I was there to hear the question and give my best possible answer. After meeting with the guy and walking around his home, talking about different rooms, he finally came out with what he had been trying to ask all day. It was awkward how he worded it, so I'll put my own spin on the question.

"How do I make my home a little more romantic?"

Of course, the answer was easy for me. I'm a woman and I know what I would like to see in a man's house if I am dating him. But, now you can see why it was a little difficult for him to ask me in the first place. He knew to come to me. He wouldn't even begin to ask another guy that question. But, it was even hard for him to just come out and let me know that was why he was seeking my advice.

So, I began. I had to consider the fact that he was a man and had to put forth a manly presence in his own home. But, he needed to dress things up a little to make the atmosphere more welcoming to the women he was dating. Pictures on the wall would be a nice place to start.

Now, I'm a home improvement expert, which means that construction and carpentry are more up my line of business. But, I don't have a problem taking a few minutes out of my day to help a guy with home décor issues. I started with describing to him what kinds of pictures would do great.

Flowers aren't what you want. You're a guy. Flowers are nice for a woman. But, for a guy living alone and wanting to date Women, flowers don't quite say what you want to say. However, nice tranquil pictures of ships at sea in the dusk hours when the sun is beginning to set says, "I'm a guy with a bit of class." Pictures of kids are great. Even if you don't have kids, pictures of your nephews and nieces say that you love kids. You want a woman to melt? Tell her you love kids.

Plants and nice animals are other big turn-ons. You don't have to have coffee table center pieces. Again, you are trying to let her know that you are all man, but that there is a classy side to you. Put a tree in the corner. Bamboo palms or birches are perfect examples of trees that you can put in the corner. Put a geranium in your window. You've got the plants covered.

Moving to the animal department, a big scary Rottweiler won't help your cause. But, something like a nice looking Golden Retriever hits the soft spot. The woman you are trying to romance will feel like kicking off her shoes, curling up on your couch and petting your dog while you carry on a half decent conversation with her. Now, all you need to do is complete the atmosphere.

Have a warm, welcoming fireplace in your living room where you can both get comfortable and actually feel the romance between you. But, my client was a renter and his home didn't have a fireplace. Nor would anyone in that situation want to invest into a fireplace for a landlord and not be able to take it with you when you move. That's why I'm loving these ventless gel fireplaces more and more. They seem to popup in every conversation I have with a client. It is the perfect solution for a romantic evening without all the hassle of the installation, maintenance and mess of traditional wood burning fireplaces.

That basically scratches the surface of our conversation. We talked about more things than that, but you get the gist. If you can set a mood in your home that says I'm all man, but I have a romantic and inviting side, then you have your dating life beat. The women you date will be more likely to want to spend more time with you. That's really all you want, isn't it? Fit your romantic atmosphere to your life. Don't be a fake!

If you don't have kids and your brothers and sisters don't have kids, don't start putting pictures of kids up all over the place. She'll ask who they are. You'll get a special look when you admit that you don't know. But, that's not a good thing. Just follow the model though. You have to have things adorning your walls that say, "You're not boring."

Not everyone can have a dog. But, fish and turtles are fine too. Use your imagination and get a pet that fits your lifestyle. There are plenty of types of animals that say to a woman you care about more than just yourself.

A fireplace is perfect for the romance you are trying to invite. There is nothing that competes with it. You can have music. You can have candles. But, a fireplace says that you have class and you know what you want. Nothing turns a woman on more than a man who knows what he wants.

There is no stupid question. If you don't ask, you'll never know. But, I'd be willing to bet that I get the weirdest questions of anyone in my line of business and that's just what I have to deal with. In fact, I love it!

Begin by considering the overall style of your home. Do you have a log home that is overwhelmingly rustic? Or are you seeking to add a rustic touch to one or more rooms of a more conventional home?
Size is Everything
Homes that feature large logs, spacious ceilings or are roomy in general require a different flavor of rustic furniture than their more conventional counterparts. If large logs make up the walls of your room, or you have a fireplace made from monster rocks from Montana, you'll need a massive log look for your furniture as well. Otherwise, your log furniture will seem dwarfed and insignificant.
Even if the home for your log furniture is a cabin with 8-inch logs, a few large pieces of furniture will look better than many small ones. Larger furniture makes a room feel full without being cluttered.

When heated with steam for a period of time, Hickory poles can easily be formed into various unique pieces of furniture. The steamed poles are placed in a jig and left to dry. They will become very rigid and retain this shape when dry.
Steam-bent hickory is strong enough to be used for tools such as hammers and axes, and unpeeled hickory accounts for one of the best-selling lines of log furniture. The Amish use steam-bent hickory to make dining room chairs, as the legs for dining room tables, coffee tables, and rockers.
Northern White Cedar
Northern White Cedar grows in Northern Michigan and Canada. It withstands the abuse of seasonal elements without breaking down or rotting like other woods. It is a beautiful light tan color when freshly milled.
It turns silvery-gray with age, but can be treated with a good quality finish to help retain its color. You will notice cracks- some small and some larger in your rustic furniture. The most surprising thing about Red Cedar (also know as Aromatic Cedar) is that it is not a member of the cedar family at all, instead belonging to the juniper family. Everyone knows the deep aromatic smell of the red cedar. The wood is heavy, and naturally insect and rot resistant.
Clothes stored in a chest made of red cedar will be protected from moths. Red cedar has tight knots that add character and beauty. It is sometimes purple, but most often a brownish red that will in time become browner even when preserved. Furniture built with red cedar will last a long time and can definitely be handed down from generation to generation.
Shopping for Quality
Not all log furniture is created equal-no matter how stylish or comfortable it may be. The quality of the materials used in log furniture, and the craftsmanship employed, vary widely-and this is often reflected in the price. Household accidents, unhealthy personal conditions and lack of family activities are the result.
To avoid such a situation, take care to make your house a comfortable and healthy place to live in. Look around you and observe carefully if any difficulty and threats are being posed due to faulty placement and wrong choice of objects. Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Rubber Mats: Though not much decorative, rubber mats are the best things to have outside your bathroom or near the kitchen sink. They will help avoid slipping and add safety to your home. Never use any kind of rugs at the top or bottom of stairs.

Place glass objects and other breakable treasures in safer areas so your family members can move freely without worrying about spoiling your decor.
8. Comfort Level: At all times, keep in mind that your home needs to be comfortable and not rigid. Things get monotonous when they are 'too perfect'. A cozy nook by the window with a small coffee table, extra pillows thrown in for a comfortable t๊te-เ-t๊te, a sparkling fireplace with a warm rug sprawled across are some examples.
9. Family Space: A 'Home' is all about a family! Include in your design/decor, special 'Family' places like a sufficiently large dinner table, a card table for indoor games etc. Like I said above in 'Sitting space', a mini dining table or wicker table-chair set in your garden or under a tree in the backyard is a lovely idea. What to Know Before Signing a Home Improvement Contract
It is important to be a very careful consumer when it comes to home improvement contractors. For instance, I had a case where my client, an elderly and blind woman, signed a contract and paid $30,000.00 to a home improvement company that disappeared with all of her money! Unfortunately, the company was a scam operation, my client lost her life's savings and it will take some time in court before my client may ever see her money again however, her mistake will be a lesson to all of you because this article explains how to protect yourself from home improvement fraud.
Before signing any contract with a home improvement company, first ask that company for its license number and check it out with your State or County Consumer Affairs' Business License Division. Find the License Division on the web or call information and get their number. You want to find out (1) the name and address of the company associated with the license number given to you, (2) if the company is currently licensed and the license expiration date and (3) whether any complaints have been made against that company. The answers to those questions will help you determine if you want to proceed with signing a contract. Make sure both the contractor and the company he works for are licensed to work in your State.
If your going to sign the contract then make sure certain things are included pursuant to your understanding and as required by your State's Home Improvement Business Law. The contracting company's name, address and phone number should be printed on the contract. Also, it is important that the contracting company's home improvement license number is printed on the contract and that it is not different from the number you called and inquired about with Consumer Affairs. Lastly, make sure that all of the work to be performed is listed in the contract and that the approximate start and end dates of work are included. You should put a penalty clause in the contract regarding the contractor's failure to timely complete the work because contractors are notorious for starting jobs and then leaving for a few days or weeks to do other jobs while you sit and wait in your dismantled kitchen for him to return. Once the contract terms are satisfactory then the contract should be signed by both you and the company's representative.
An example of a consumer protection law is New York's General Business Law ง771 ("GBL") requiring all home improvement contracts shall be in writing and contain certain terms of payment, fees for services and materials and start and completion dates, among other terms. GBL ง771 is a consumer protection statute to prevent the misunderstandings between contractor had consumer and to protect the consumer from overreaching of the contractor, such as charging for work that was not agreed upon. GBL ง771 limits the contractor who disregards its written contract requirements to satisfactorily proving to a court each and every item of work he did and the reasonable value of each item by detailed invoices, timesheets and proof of hourly rates, among other proofs. So, if the contractor who failed to put your home improvement work in writing attempts to collect $20,000.00 from you, he has to prove the value of his services in detail before scaring you into paying an amount you had no idea about. New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act and the Home Improvement Act protect the consumer even more by denying the contractor from recovering any monies if he violates any of the consumer laws AND he will pay three times the amount of damages (called treble damages) to the consumer for his failing to obtain proper permits or licenses or any other violation of those laws.
Lastly, protect yourself by not paying 100% upfront. Most contracting companies ask for a deposit upon your signing the contract. I suggest that you put down as little as possible and arrange a payment schedule with the company where you will pay a certain amount as certain work is completed. Of course, always get a receipt, signed by the company and stating the date and amount of any monies paid to the company if you pay anything in cash.

In this fast moving world of the 21st century, we are always forced to do everything in a rush, even eating and sleeping. The normal words of today are "hurry", "rush", "fast", "quick" and "immediately." In comparison with 20 years ago, today we have to move or work as fast as possible to survive in a competitive environment with creative and innovative ways. Even though modern technology innovations were introduced decades ago, the new technology has not yet given us the opportunity to create new products to reduce the stress of people in everyday life. We are living under constant mental and physical stress, with more and more demands from our current society.
There are many consumer products claiming that they will cure stress and make life easy, but it is still hard to find good and innovative products on the market for consumers. From time to time, I wonder why multimillion dollar companies, which have hundreds of research engineers and scientists in their R&D departments, are not creating and producing the new, innovative products for consumers.
New product innovation is not complicated to create. By watching how people are using the products, anyone can have an idea of how to improve existing products or create new ones. No products are perfect when they are invented or developed in the first place; therefore any product has room to be improved into a better one.
For example, examining paint related-products, I could not find really innovative or new products for improving paint jobs to make them easy and enjoyable. We are still using the same products and the same methods of doing paint jobs as we did a hundred years ago. In the past, whenever I did a paint job, I always found something bothering me or some inconvenience about painting and I have asked myself why better products do not exist for easy and quick paint jobs. About a year ago, I finally decided to research and develop new paint-related products that are simple to use, inexpensive and environmentally friendly.
1. Ergonomic Paint-Can Handle/Opener
Everybody knows that carrying a paint can by its wire handle is uncomfortable and causes hand and arm pain. Based on research among professional painters, I discovered there is a need for a comfort handle. The sad fact of life is that for every hundred reputable tradesmen who will carry out your home improvement project to your exact specifications, on time and at a reasonable price, there are a few rogue 'cowboys' out there whose only objective is to part you from your money as quickly as possible with scant regard for their workmanship and that's if any work gets done at all!
However, there are many things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of these 'con artists'.
Firstly, ask friends of yours for recommendations. They may have had work done by a particular tradesman previously who carried out a professional job at a fair price. If that's not possible, make sure the tradesman can prove their competence by finding out if they are trained to do the job and whether they are members of a particular trade association. The tradesmen themselves should be able to supply that information and give you contact details of associations with whom you can verify their claims or, alternatively, you can contact a particular trade association and ask them to recommend someone in your area.
Always ask for a written estimate or, better still, a fixed quote prior to work commencing and get a few quotations so you can make comparisons. Ask for this to be specifically put in writing and, if there is any 'small print' or things you don't understand, ask them to explain it fully and to add the explanation into an amended quotation before you sign any agreements.
You should also ask any tradesmen certain questions in addition to verifying their ability and reputation to do the job as mentioned above. This should include asking how many projects like yours they've completed in the past couple of years and to give you some references so you can contact previous people who have had work carried out by the tradesman. Ask them to produce an insurance certificate so you can be sure that you'll receive compensation should the job go wrong.
When it comes to payment, try to limit, or even eliminate, any upfront payment as much as possible and always pay by cheque or by credit card. Never use cash. Quite often, a reputable tradesman will not require any payment until the job's completed to your satisfaction, but if it's a big job that's going to take some time, they may require some form of payment upfront for materials and additional labour costs first. If that's the case, make sure you have written proof and their signature to say that they have received X amount before starting the job.
If they require some payment upfront, ask them to give you contact details of other customers who can verify that this arrangement worked out OK. Where possible, negotiate payment in stages. So much after 25% of the work's done, another payment after half is done and the rest upon satisfactory completion is an example. Don't make any final payment until you're fully satisfied that the work has been completed to your specifications and, if they are using other sub-contractors, ensure that these have all been paid prior to handing over the final payment to the main contractor. Don't hand over any final payment until the tradesman hands over written warranties for materials and for the quality of workmanship and that you have written proof that all sub-contractors have been paid in full.
Providing you ask the right questions, get satisfactory answers, do your research and get everything put in writing, there should be no problem, but watch out for scams. These include tradesmen who'll only accept cash, those who'll ask you to pay for the entire job upfront, those who do not provide you with a business or a home address and telephone number or suggest that you borrow money to pay for the job from a lender they know, or those that solicit door-to-door.
Knowledge, vigilance and awareness are your best forms of protection in ensuring your home improvement project is completed without any hitches.

How To Completely Rehab Your Home In 10 Days!
This report is about taking a house and restoring it to an aesthetically pleasing dwelling that has reclaimed it's functional utility. In effect, it is the anti-aging medication for bricks and mortar.
This report assumes that you have already or will soon acquire the proper house. The one that is in essence, ripe for rehab. Be selective and sure of the house's potential to allow for a profit after all the hard work is done. I will help you find your house or houses.
In the proverbial nutshell, it helps if you choose a house from the start that has a sound plumbing, heating and electrical system.
? Plumbing? Heating? Electrical
These are things that are expensive to correct in relation to the value they return to you upon resale. Most often, people cannot see the inner workings of these systems and they take them for granted.
Very few buyers are going to give you an extra $15,000-$20,000 in your asking price because you have replaced things that they can't see and already take for granted as just a basic component that is buried in the structure. Also, they assume these components to be warranted against defects by you.
After all, it is mandatory in most, if not all states that you fill out a disclosure form that tells the buyer of every defect that exists or ever has to your knowledge. So inspect the systems of your investment alternatives carefully, as they can be expensive to repair and replace, with minimum dollar return value being realized at the sale.
Along these same lines, you should also pay close attention to the following cash vacuums:
? Roof? Foundation? Structural Integrity
Here are a few ways to quickly gage a home from its appearance:
Stand across the street from it. Now look at the bones of the structure. Does it look like a sway-backed horse, with the roof sagging in the middle? Does it have flat areas in its design that don't allow water to be drained away quickly?
Water, dampness and rot are the equivalent of cancer to the human body when it concerns a structure. Shingles can be replaced. That won't necessarily stop me from buying. Usually I will use that old roof as a bargaining chip in negotiating the seller down to a lower price. However, if I crawl into the attic and see that the plywood has become rotted and truss members are also affected, it's time to move on to my next potential deal. Life is too short and I will never rehab it in 10 days if I have to rip the roof off and rebuild it too.
Some other conditions, such as sagging eves, wavy roof surface, rotten fascia and trim pieces, and insect infestations can be deal killers too, if severe.
Solution: Get into the structural members with a long, sharp, sturdy, standard flat-tip screwdriver and attempt to penetrate structural components that are made of wood. You won't hurt anything if there are no underlying deficiencies. However, if someone has freshly painted over or patched it, that screwdriver is one heck of a lie detector! Use it.
Now, I'm not saying people would do that. It may just be the termites have eaten everything but the exterior coating of the wood to conceal their activity whatever the case probe.
There are also tile roofs, metal roofs, cedar shake roofs, hot-rolled roofing, tar and gravel roofs and always a few new high-tech roof coatings. I feel my main concern is whether the decking or the roof support structure has been undermined by water, insects, rodents, poor materials, poor design or craftsmanship, a lack of fasteners, strapping, etc.
Shingles and coatings can be replaced. Just know what is underneath. That's my criteria. Negotiate lower for needed replacement of roof coverings if you can. I dwell on roofs because it protects everything else!
Next on the list of deal killers is the foundation. The same thing applies to the foundation. I will start by standing back from it and looking at it from a distance. Does this place look like the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Or are the seams coming apart? Do the windows and doors look square? Are porches, stairs and additions on firm ground as well?
Block homes can tell you very quickly if they are stressed out just by the appearance of the mortar joints. Those giant unsettling cracks can and do tell a story. This does happen and mortar cracks maybe 10-years old. You need to investigate further.
Once again, water is a sign of trouble with foundations because it leads to erosion, rot, mold and mildew. It washes out foundation materials and slabs will crack. It rots sill plates and your walls are no longer firmly attached to a base.
If you have a crawl space, it's time to get your coveralls on and get in there. Now, let's use our heads here and I mean this! Before you enter a dark, supposedly uninhabited, infrequently entered, dark and restrictive to movement area, assess the situation. Ask someone who has knowledge of the dwelling if there has been any animal activity that they know of. You may also encounter bees, wasps, ants, spiders, snakes, slugs, mosquitoes, rats, mice and a host of other inhabitants. Beware and be prepared. It's truly another world in some cases.
If you don't want to do it, hire a professional and I do mean a pro, not some Joe who says he is one. For goodness sake, use a licensed professional home inspector to protect yourself in all areas if you're just not sure!
OK, you're a trooper and you're going in. Good for you, Rambo! You'll make it in this business because it takes faith, guts and determination. By getting into this type of situation, you'll learn a lot more about every part of the homes you inspect.
You should have a strong flashlight, your trusty screwdriver, maybe some insect repellent and a safety observer standing at the access entry to give you piece of mind. Now you can go to the perimeter walls and inspect where the walls meet the foundation. Look for rot, misalignment, cracks, separations, water damage or any other condition that doesn't appear normal.
While you're down there, look at the other foundational supports, you will see pier blocks and posts, other concrete support pillars and walls, beams, joists and cross bracing, and the underside of sub-flooring. Check this stuff's condition. Does it look original? Is it structurally sound? Or are there some discrepancies that need further investigation? Take a good look and smell!
Don't leave yet. You also will want to look at all that plumbing and electrical that is there as well. Scan the perimeter. Do you see any sunlight coming in from where it shouldn't be? That might be a hole that needs repair. This is common sense land, not computer a chip lab. You can inspect for general condition. Simply follow everything to its logical end, looking mainly at the condition of the different components.
OK, you've made mental and physical notes. Now dust yourself off and go inside the house if everything has checked out so far. So the roof and foundation have passed your keen eye. Let's look at the rest of the house with respect to its structural integrity. More than half of your structural integrity check at this point is already complete as the roof and foundation are two of the most important components and those have been done. Now you are left with the interior spaces of the structure.
Here's what I do once inside. I stand at the front door with a checklist in hand (www.inspectamerica.com) and I begin to scan the walls, ceiling and floors. I'm looking for water stains on all three surfaces, as well as patches that were used to repair or conceal damage. I go through every room and look for signs of damage or concealment.
Any flat floor is a good candidate for my scientific marble test. I'll drop my marble; if it rolls to a corner, that floor ain't level, Buckwheat. That's a simple test but I do want to know that the under-layer or sub-flooring is sound and firmly attached to all those joists, and beams and trimmers and blah, blah, blah.
Soft spongy floors are of concern, creaky floors are annoying and rotten floors are another story. So once again, I'm looking at the structural support of the floors. I don't care that the cheap, yellowed vinyl is coming up at the seams. I don't care that the carpet is matted down or thread bare, and I don't mind if the finish is worn off of hardwood floors or tiles are loose.
Floor coverings fall under the label of cosmetics. That's such a pretty word and that's what you want to concentrate on: cosmetics...more on that in a moment.
So the floors pass my test for sub-flooring and structural integrity is great. Now I can check that the walls are square because they are attached to that floor, and then I can check that the doors all operate properly and are square too.
How much more can there be than that, Dan? Well, let me tell you a few things that can bite you here. Let's say the structure overall is good. By that, I mean you have a solid roof, a solid foundation and sturdy floors and walls.
What is behind those walls? The things that bite you aren't usually seen until you get bit. One particular painful bite is finding out your wiring is not grounded or that the circuits are not properly protected. You're looking for three-pronged outlets and modern plastic-encased wiring made of copper, not aluminum. You want circuit breakers, not fuses. What you really need here is a licensed electrician to do this more in-depth and professionally licensed review of the system.
I have seen more than one Joe Homeowner rehab go up in flames because of a lack of respect for electricity. Licensed electricians bring you up to code and protect your investment. Find a good one and make it a point to shower him or her with praise, attention and money well spent.
They will give you free estimates, so use them as a preliminary inspector with you. If you decide to buy it, use them to do the work that needs to be done.
Plumbers are a breed apart. You would think they use gold for soldering your pipes with the prices they charge. My grandfather was a plumber and I was on the truck with him at nine years old. A plumber may or may not give you a free estimate. With a little digging, it can be done. Just give them the work if indeed you do buy the house.
With plumbers, the only time you're going to need one is if you are doing major system work or the once every ten year hot water heater job. Also the occasional clogged main sewer line to the street.
In today's P.V.C. plastic plumbing kits world, you can hire just about any good all-around handyman to get the job done. If you have to tear through a wall to get at plumbing, building code inspector-man will say, "Get a licensed plumber."
Heating and cooling: the air conditioning system, if the house you're inspecting doesn't have adequate heating and cooling, that can become expensive. Let's say you have a flat roof home in a hot climate with window unit air-conditioners, and you intend on bringing this house up to what a modern day home dweller expects.
You may have a problem. Where would you put new ductwork if you don't have attic space to house and route central heat and air? Once again, call in a pro if you need some advice. They do give free estimates!
Here's a point for you to follow up on: the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning guys all drive service trucks. Be on the lookout for those trucks if they are your neighbors; go say "Hello" and introduce yourself.
Regardless, I have always done this and what I am saying is this: these guys most always work on the side and that means half price. You may have to pull a permit as a homeowner but the savings is substantial. Develop a network of these blue-collar geniuses. They are the guys who will transform your investment fast!
So now you have a solid house. By that I mean, plumbing, electrical, heating and air-conditioning, roof, foundation and overall good structural integrity.
So what's left to do? Call in your army of carpenter ants, from painters to carpenters and flooring installers, yard maintenance and tree trimmers, and handymen of all sorts.
This is the whirlwind tour. Let the demolition guy in first. Order a dumpster for the next ten days. Order demolition man to throw out everything including the kitchen sink. What I am out to do at this point is to clear the decks.
A blank canvass is created for the painters to perform the transformation. They come in at this point and patch and paint. Let them blast the place with their airless paint-spraying arsenal inside and out. Give them 3 days and you have just added a huge improvement to your investment. This is the biggest dollar-for-dollar return you can make.
One cautionary note here: Make absolutely sure that quality paint is used. When it comes to painting, it's the labor that kills you, not the material. I insist on Sherwin Williams Super Paint. It is a miracle formula that I am convinced could cover up bullet holes without any patching compound and it lasts forever. It's worth every penny; insist on it!
So my idea of finding the ideal fixer upper is to find those where the structure and systems are fine but it still needs demolition man and the paint brigade. Everything up to this point has been inspection and appraisal of the situation. Once I'm satisfied that it is a cosmetic rehab and not the expensive money pit, I send in my cosmetologists.
I wouldn't call these guys that to their face but these are normally men adding residential make-up to the bricks and mortar. Once the painters leave, the flooring guys are right behind them, laying tile and carpet. These guys are out in 2-3 days and my cabinet and handyman plumber are attacking.
Light fixtures, vanities, toilets, sinks, doors, switch plates and outlet covers?wham, ten days are up and this house is either held out for rent, lease-optioned or sold for a whole heck of a lot more than the ten grand I put into it, if that much.
You must be somewhat of an appraiser and deal finder. It takes time to recruit your cosmetologists, but you will run across them in your travels. Friends and family usually can provide you with some serious leads. Start networking and talking to tradesmen. Get their numbers and schedule them to descend upon your ugly duckling at certain times and watch the transformation begin.
It took me years to learn these tricks. I did it all myself for years and it always took three months when I did it myself. The sad part is that I thought I was saving money that way.
Can you see how much I actually lost? Here is a quick example. I bought a house for $55,000. Its deficiencies were purely cosmetic. I used other people to do all the work and I pitched in to keep them organized. Ten days later, it was done. I spent a total of $5,000 on materials and labor and it appraised at $90,000 in 10 days!
That's $30,000 in 10 days, not 3 months. Now marketing time would take 45 days but I know how to do that too, and I will also show you how you can do it too.
There is no doubt about it. This can be done and you can do it. In all honesty, it may take you 30 days to achieve a completed house. That's may be 3 times what it took me but I am experienced.
Here's a pretty neat way I figured out how to find good cosmetologists (tradesmen). If I know relatively no one in the area, I will ask a local appraiser to suggest who he would use if he were me.
This is an intelligent way to ask that question. I ask it in this form: "If you were me, who would you use?" Now that triggers a self-preservation mechanism in their brain and they give me excellent people, who are very good at what they do! Try it; it works.
I went to appraisal school and learned a lot. Believe me, appraisers are underrated and treated poorly. They truly are experts at discerning quality and value. They know whom does quality work. Make friends with a competent appraiser and the lenders that accept their appraisals. Hint: You'll get very fair evaluations and their lender approves them.
Marketing, hunting, finding and capturing the "ripe for rehab houses" is another book entirely. However, don't lose faith because I have written that book for you as well. Here is an excerpt from my other book. It is called Magic Bullets In Real Estate.
There are 4 phases, or lifecycles, to real estate and here is how it often goes.
Phase 1 You will see new construction, bright shiny homes popping up,
landscaping contests, baby strollers and tricycles in the neighborhood.
This is probably going on in the suburbs of the city, as new growth tends
to radiate out at a pace of one mile per year from growing and
prosperous cities.
Phase 2 The same neighborhood now 10-15 years later has aged a bit and
now you see basketball hoops and 2-wheel bikes, as the kids are older
and want more mobility.
Phase 3 The kids are grown and gone with families of their own and now the
parents are riding their own 3-wheel bicycles, trikes to the hip grannies.
Here in Phase 3, you're looking at 25-35 year old homes, where some
people are passing away. Others are just hanging in and some are
moving in with the kids or going to an A.L.F. (Assisted Living Facility).
No doubt, you have outdated homes, deferred maintenance and some
repairs to be made. Here is the beauty of this whole thing. These are my
cosmetology candidates. Here's why! The formally elder owners lived
there and they needed everything to work. They didn't update it. They
just fixed things that needed repair in order to maintain a level of
comfort. They had pest control and the Sears man come annually and
piddled around. So things were kind of looked after in that manner. Buy
here!
Phase 4 Revitalization ? That's what happens as a result of you buying your ripe-
for-rehab fixer-upper in Phase 3 neighborhoods. Odds are, you will rent
it out, lease-option it or sell it to a young family when it does sell, and
guess what? Yep, out come the tricycles and baby strollers and it starts
all over again.

The harder and smarter you work, the better quality and value you can provide to others. Don't rip them off. Don't take advantage, don't scrimp and for Pete's sake, do your best to do your level best. You need education and help from others to achieve these heights of excellence.

Do you know that formaldehyde, a colorless, pungent-smelling gas can cause severe health effects to us? Sources of formaldehyde are:-

The scary part is formaldehyde can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing when exposed at elevated levels. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. Health effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation; wheezing and coughing; fatigue; skin rash; severe allergic reactions. High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma.
Since research shows that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, be sure to keep our homes well ventilated all the time. Besides that, try placing the following plants in your home:-

Apparently, NASA in 1973 has made an experiment to find a solution to maintain air quality inside confined spaces and the results show that the above plants are able to remove pollutants from the air. Since different plants absorb different pollutants, it will be a good idea to mix a minimum of two plants per 100 square feet of floor space. Of course, there are no harms in having more (not in bedroom though, you will need the oxygen at night!) as long as you know where to place them.

1. Seek professional advice before planning a bathroom. You may need to consider local water regulations, existing plumbing facilities and the way your house is constructed.
2. Define the role and requirements of the new bathroom. Planning a bathroom involves more than the positioning of basic fixtures such as the bath, basin and toilet. Make sure your plan allows for plenty of floor for wall space and for extras such as towel rail, mirror and storage.
3. Decide if you need to make any changes to existing services and whether structural work is required. For this you will want to jot down factors such as the direction (north, south, east, west) your patio is facing, prevailing winds, if any; areas in sun or shade and any other relevant observations that will impact the quality of people spending time in that space. Now for the fun part, create a realistic wish list beginning with how you would like to use your patio: to relax, to entertain friends, to grill/barbeque, to eat outdoors, to hang out with friends and family, to converse, etc. Now go back to your site analysis and determine, if applicable, where you can start staging the pieces to your outdoor room. But before you do so, here are some tips and ideas for you to consider.
Arrange patio furniture and elements thoughtfully

Creating a sense of enclosure is a great way to make your outdoor space more intimate; it is also a great way to create separation and privacy from your neighbors. Think of the walls and ceilings inside your home: the walls are the vertical plane and the ceiling is the overhead plane. Outdoors these vertical and overhead planes help create the foundations to an outdoor room. While you don't want to overdo it or completely enclose your outdoor space, adding elements: shrubs, trees, arbors, trellises pergolas and such in a careful way can improve the atmosphere of your patio space.
Buying patio furniture and accessories
Once you've measured your outdoor space, done the site analysis and figured out the area where you will be putting your outdoor furniture it's time to begin reviewing outdoor furniture and accessory options. If your patio is very small, you may only want to buy 1 or 2 chairs or loungers for conversation and relaxing, and a small bistro table with chairs for snacking. If your space is large, you may be looking for a larger seating arrangement: sofas, chairs, coffee tables, in one area and a patio set with umbrella in another. Finally, look for a professional builder who builds homes full time and has a vision and style that matches your own.
