Have you ever thought of forming a band by gathering a few music enthusiastic who can play other types of musical instruments?

By forming a band, you can utilise the strength of individual, writing music and trying to promote your music. It's the greatest feeling in the world, when someone tells you that they like your music. Better still, a recording company interested in your music. It is always better to start a band with a group of friends because all will feel relax around each other and feel more confident in your ability to be able to play your instrument. If you haven't got a group of friends who are willing to start a band, start to spread the word around. You may also check out from the internet by surfing the related website or forums. Many websites are available to you to find musicians in your area.

A few important things to consider when forming a band

1. Determine the type of music the band is going to play (Jazz, Pop, Blues, Countries etc) 2. Who do what? A band member may be able to play more than one music instruments and hence, define his or her primary responsibility. 3. Song writing can be carried out by any of the member as long as the song written is suitable. Usually the lead singer takes on the responsibility to write, but don't forget any member of the band can write music or lyrics. 4. Identify a suitable location for band member to meet. Be considerate; do not practice during the zzz hours so as not to cause disturbance. 5. Meet at least twice a week or even more. Practice makes perfect, if you want to be good at something, you have to put in the hard work. The timeframe of these practice sessions is up to you but you will find it hard to achieve anything for less than 2 hours a session. 6. Don't forget to record everything in practice, so you can listen over before every practice session and identify the areas need improvement.

When your band is ready to perform, put on a show for your friends and family, maybe in a large room of your home, or in the garden. You will probably always get good feedback from your friends and family, this should raise your confidence. But you will only know if your music is decent when you play a performance. Many bars / clubs have Open Mic night, this is perfect for you. Make an effort to contact them frequently to ask for a slot, eventually you will get one. Finding other bands to support can also help you get a performance and will also build a better network for your band.

It is meaningless if no one turns up at your performance? To promote, you may hand out flyers. And it's a good idea to place flyers in your local music shop or music instrument store, and they can help to give them out when someone purchases something. If possible, ask the shopkeepers to post flyers in there windows.

One of the best ways to promote in this day is myspace. Create a profile for your band in myspace and send out bulletins, comments, messages about your performance. Another thing one may consider is to build a website for your band. This will help you to promote your band to peoples from every part of the world. This will help to build a fan base, as you can upload your songs to your website for everyone one to listen to.

About the Author
About the author

Chong HY is music enthusiastic. Believe it or not, your health is very dependent on the interior of your home. Here's why.

When you enjoy your home's interior, it has an effect on the subconscious mind; when you enjoy being in your home because you like the interior, your health improves as a result. Here are some tips to picking out the cabinets you want to achieve the kitchen interior design you've always wanted.

First of all, take a trip down to your local home improvement store and check out the kitchen cabinets on display. Often times, there are a number of different options to choose from, so your choices are not limited, at least if the store is a decent size.

Also consider shopping online for your kitchen cabinets. On the internet, you can have a much wider variety of options at your fingertips, because there are literally thousands of websites that retail kitchen cabinets, and they are all available at the click of a button.

When shopping, in addition to the overall design, an important element to consider is how you plan to use the kitchen cabinets. For instance, if you plan to store plates and food inside, you will likely need larger cabinets to handle this task.

Even if you find one that you believe is absolutely perfect for your kitchen, if the size doesn't fit your needs, it's best to keep shopping. Remember, even though style is very important, if it doesn't fit with your kitchen interior design, keep shopping.

Make sure you've measured your kitchen interior design area beforehand to determine the space you have available for your new cabinets. If you don't have the necessary room, buying a new cabinet that won't fit can be disastrous, especially if you purchased it on the internet.

If you've made a transaction online, you will have to ship the item or items back to the store where they came from, and often times will be forced to pay a restocking fee, not to mention the massive amount of headaches that ordering the wrong size can cause.

Be very careful when choosing your cabinets. This is a mistake that all too many homeowners make that could very easily have been avoided with some simply planning.

Finally, after you've taken these steps and identified a group of cabinets that fit your above criteria, only now should you begin looking at the style. It is pointless to search for the right style before you even know if the cabinet will fit in your kitchen.

Once you have a group of cabinets that are the right size and would fit with your overall kitchen interior design established, choose the best cabinet from the options you have available. Follow these simple tips, and you will have kitchen cabinets that will enable you to achieve the kitchen interior design of your dreams.

About the Author
To learn about renovation financing and other great redesign tips, try checking out http://www.interior-design-success.com. It not only shelters one from all the natural exigencies, but also acts as an emotional blanket to cover one in times of stress and need. We as Humans have a lot of animal like tendencies. We prefer to hibernate during the winters mostly. At least we leave all our important business activities for the springtime. It is during this season that people decide to refurbish and do up their houses. Maybe they want to sell their house or maybe they are plain sick and tired of the old look and want to go in for a makeover. After all if humans can do it, why can't houses look good? This is where a home improvement mortgage comes handy.

Why I have specified on the seasons has a secret behind it. During wintertime when you do not have much to do, you can actually load your piggy bank. You should try to Save as much as possible. If you hang around for a very long time doing no saving, it will only be more expensive for you. It will also cost you a lot of time. Most of the times, the money we save is not enough. We then go in for a home improvement mortgage. They are actually loans that are utilized to fund for the upgrading of your home. These mortgages are extremely beneficial for us because they boost the worth of our habitats. Now what can these improvements be like? They can be things like -

Major repairs

Total renovation like remake of toilet or kitchen.

Upgrading of garden etc.

There are plenty of home improvement mortgages available. It is for you to decide which one is the most suitable for you. A comprehensive table can be made which can include all the computed as well as probable costs. The calculations should also include the total value you are anticipating. You see a foresight is a must in this kind of planning. This is not only for your own good; it's also very essential, as you may have to show it to your mortgage provider. One has to do a lot of survey before going for this kind of preparation. It is also better to take the opinion, calculations and costs from other service providers.

You can go in for a lot of choices here. There are a number of home improvement mortgages available -

Loans for refinancing

First and second mortgages

Personal loans

Donations

A lot of queries play hide and seek in our minds. What will be the monthly installments? What are the tax repercussions? What are the likely deductions on the income tax? The most important question of all, whether the improvements that we embark on will add to the worth of our home and will it be more than the home improvement mortgage that we have applied for? Even while taking a loan, the first step is to discuss all terms and conditions with the lender who is providing you with the home improvement mortgage. Possible negotiations can also take place. You can even avail of a personal loan that has been paid out by a finance company or bank.

One must realize that now the home improvement expenses have increased a lot. There are lots of people who have the money to make their homes look brand new again. There are of course many who still need some support. For them, the home improvement mortgage is really a God gift.

About the Author
Martin Lukac represents RateEmpire.com Refinance Loan and Home Equity Loan and financial marketplace. The interest rates are lower and secured home improvement loans are approved easily for people with bad credit as well as they involve a collateral. One home improvement works are done, the value of the property as well as the equity rises as well, adding to ones financial strength. Secured home loans are considered the best option when changes or modifications are to be made to ones home to give it a fresher look. The borrower may pay the secured home improvement loan back in larger durations of up to 5-10 years if he wishes to. The amount that can be acquired from the secured home improvement loan is between £5000 and £75000. Theses loans are approved are approved without any delays, however, one must put adequate research into the matter and make sure that the lender is trustworthy. Applying online is also a good idea as the loan is acquired faster this way and the credit score is also improved. All that is required is to fill up an application form along with the necessary documents. The process is quick and decisive. It is important that one consults an architect or some other professional before going for a loan so that one has a fair estimate of the loan amount. The first thing to look for in a secured home improvement loan is a lower interest rate. It is a fact that the equity attached with ones house determines the interest rate. As there are several lenders who offer secured home improvement loans, the rates vary from lender to lender. The borrower should make sure hat the secured home improvement loan is paid back on time as, if defaulted, ones house may be taken over by the lender. The loan is essentially a long term loan. Bad credit is not much of a problem as many people applying for such loans have arrears and default payments pending. The only downside is that the secured home improvement loan comes at a higher interest rate. A cheaper loan is a major factor affecting the improvements that are to take place in ones home and the cheaper the loan the better. It is obvious that if the borrowed amount is lower than the equity, the interest would be less, and the lender would try his best to win over the customer.

About the Author
Steve Clark can tell you how to look better, live better and breathe better by giving you tips to improve your finances. The idea is to increase its overall value and rapidly re-sell the improved property for a quick profit. If you research and buy at the right time you can make $20,000 to $50,000 or more per flip, and do it in less than 90 days. Steps "How to Flip a House"

1. The most important step in the flipping process is to educate your self about the real estate market. Read magazines such as Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Money; these often have articles about real estate. The housing market is very lucrative, at one moment the prices of homes can dramatically increase, while overnight property values can also decrease. Look in the area for specific prices of homes with the same property type. For instance use other people's sales statistics and market values as research tools. If you are looking at "flipping" a single family home that is 2000sq ft the asking price should be significantly lower than the actual market value. Remember you are trying to unload this property quickly.

2. Looking for a home. These are some ideas on what to look for in a great "flipping opportunity" o A home with room for improvement might have a run-down yard, old carpet, a good spot for a carport, or other things that can be fixed with a little money and some hard labor. o Some people look for distressed properties. Those are ones that the seller is "desperate to sell" for reasons such as: divorce, bankruptcy, death, poor condition of the property, late on payments or other. o Look for homes that sell in the middle to upper range. What that means is the amount where the average family would be able to afford it. Generally that means between about $200,000, and $500,000 depending on your area. You want that price range because these sell the fastest as theirs the largest population density looking for these mid range homes. It could be much less or much more but that's about the average. The home should have: 3 or more bedrooms. It must have at least 2 full bathrooms.

3. Once you have done your research and found the perfect opportunity, you are ready to get started. First find a specific lender that will allow you to take out more than your asking price for the home. Ex. always allow yourself extra money for unexpected repairs, many times you will find labor and building material costs may not be what you envisioned. I usually allow an extra 5,000 dollars for repairs and excess costs.

4. Sit down before you start and agree on how much money is going too be spent during what phase. Give your self a plan of action and a daily routine, this is very important to finish your flip in the allotted time. Say on Day 1 all of the demolition work needs to be completed-- a reasonable goal. Keeping this type of journal or notes will allow you to easily calculate where you stand on purchases and how much is left for you flip. If you have ever seen "Flip This House" you know what I mean here. Many people think that you can just buy put a disclosed amount of money into the property and resell. BIG Mistake.

5. Lastly always finish the little details and remember to get you house evaluated before putting it up for sale. Look at the prices in the area and other homes of the same space type. The best thing is to pick a day and visit open house in the area; this will give a good idea where your house needs improvements or points of emphasis you can tell the buyer during your open house. I generally will on purposely sell my properties for about 5% below market value. I know what you're thinking he is crazy Right. Step back and look at from my perspective below market value. Today real estate is certainly becoming a very lucrative place to put one's money in for many homeowners. Many homeowners are using the equity they have built into their home to get liquid cash in their pocket for a number of things. This type of financing is often referred to as a home owner's loan, or a home improvement loan, or a home equity loan. How it works is you use your existing real estate as collateral to finance a loan for your home improvement needs. Either way, no matter what it is called, you must own some property for your loan application to be accepted. Whether you need a fresh coat of paint in the house, a total home renovation, or Betsy's off to college and you need some money, a home loan could help you finance all these expenses.

Updating the bathroom, building an addition for your new home office, or any type of remodeling requires financing. Luckily today there are many means that you can use to fund your real estate improvements. The first thing you need to do is determine how much you need and how long do you need it for. If you can determine this relatively quickly, it will be that much easier to determine whether you go with a home improvement loan, home owner's loan, or just use your credit cards. Another factor you need to consider is how long do you think you will require to pay off the loan amount? If it is going to be less than a year, using your tax refund may be just as equitable to you and save you from borrowing against your real estate. If you need enough money that it will take as long as twenty years to pay it off, then financing against your home may be one of the best alternatives that you should consider.

Borrowing against your home can come with whatever terms you want it to. It can be short, medium, or long term. Each loan sees options within options, each of which comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. What options you end up going with will be relatively easy depending on what criteria you go into the loan with. These criteria include how much equity you have in your own, what your credit rating situation is like, and how much time you will eventually be needing in regard to when you intend to pay it back.

There are various different approaches, and you will only know what is best for your specific situation by sitting down with your banker or loan officer to find out what is best for you. You and your loan officer will together evaluate your financial situation thoroughly, and the real estate you are using as collateral. By doing this you will be able to conclude which is the best home owner's loan you can take for your home improvement needs.

About the Author
Ajeet Khurana writes on finance topics. All that dirt and moss isn't just an eye sore, it is damaging your roof. Dirt can cause you rooftop to stop absorbing and reflecting away heat properly which can damage your shingles. As well moss and algae growth can damage shingles and remove the granules which protect your shingles from damage.

Not sure if your roof is at risk, there are a couple ways to check and see. The first way is to check the gutters, the more granules in the gutters the more damage your shingles are taking. Another way is to take a board and wrap some tape around one end so that the sticky side is out and press it against some shingles to see how many granules come lose. If you notice the areas with dirt and growth lose more granules then other areas.

Still not sure you should clean your roof or not, here is a list of some reasons why you should:

1. Prolongs shingle life
2. Makes ugly roof stains vanish
3. Lowers utility bills
4. Reduces airborne allergens helping allergy sufferers
5. Inexpensive, fast, dramatic home Improvement
6. Helps resale value/ property value
7. Improves drinking water for cistern users
8. Puts doubts about your roof to rest for potential homebuyers and home inspectors
9. Cheaper than a new roof
10. "Extreme Makeover" for your roof improves curb appeal

Please note that getting on your own roof if you do not have experience in rooftop work can be dangerous. There are many companies out there that specialize in (http://cnc-construction.biz/) rooftop cleaning and you should leave that work to professionals.

Roof Cleaning Products

I highly recommend looking into a product called Roof Reviver. It is specifically designed to clean roofs and remove the dirt and growth from rooftops. I am sure there are (http://cnc-construction.biz/) rooftop cleaning specialists in your area that use this product, just make a few phone calls and find out who.

Roof Reviver can, in most cases, restore you rooftop to like new condition with only one application. This will add years to your roof and make your house look much more attractive. If you are looking to sell your home soon this can also increase the selling points of your home. This is due to the fact that the buyers know that they will not need to have the roof replaced as it is clean and growth free. Once you roof is clean and great looking I also recommend getting it rinsed once a year to continue to keep it clean. This will greatly increase the life of your shingles and help save you the money of having your roof replaced before it needed to be.

Benefits of a Clean Roof

Roof stains can cause your roof to hold in more heat due to the darkening effect of the stains, as much as a 25 degree increase. This heat increase can shorten shingle life, increase your cooling bills, and increase personal discomfort in your home.

A dirty roof can make it much harder to sell your home when that time comes. A functional, yet badly stained roof can make home-buyers, real-estate agents, and home inspectors doubtful of the roofs reliability and may cause them to want it to be replaced even though it is a perfectly good roof, which is stained. Therefore getting your roof cleaned before putting it on the market can actually save you money.

Also it just makes your home look much better. Having all the moss, algae, and stains removed from your roof can increase the look of your home greatly, you may not even notice the effect the stains are having on the appeal of your home, because they have always been there.

About the Author
Christopher Lovell is a Web Content Specialist for Innuity. Camomille tea and chicken soup are said to be the best remedies.

Because sometimes bronchitis is mistaken with a simple flu patients try to treat it on their own. Emergen -C style vitamins, Robitussin may help you to cough and expectorate and have a good sleep during the night. You should stay in door and in warm places (in bed) and let your organism to take care of it. Hot baths and plenty of fluids are of great help, when you sleep maintain a half sitting up position so as to cough less.

Eating honey is also heplfull because it may soothe the throat. For acute bronchitis you do not need antibiotics so the infection will disappear in one week, if you have fever you may take aspirin, do not smoke. For a secondary bacterial infection antibiotics are prescribed and maybe an inhaler and an expectorant. Theraflu and tea with lemon and honey, hot toddies with bourbon are helpfully. For some people with bronchitis hot baths instead of steam are better.

Codeine is the most wanted ingredient when you have acute bronchitis. It has been explained why cough suppressants are not useful, you drown with your own secretions that can't be eliminated.

If you have trouble breathing in the Emergency Room you may be given an albuterol breathing treatment, an inhaler, and some prednasone. Bronchitis may complicate with pneumonia and that is quite severe, especially in children which are not supervized by parents and they do not treat well or at whole their bronchitis. That's why important to have rest and warm. Sometimes only the rest and the home care won't help so try to visit your doctor and buy your drugs, even more important is to take them. If you notice that your health is not improved in one week than you may suspect a complication, the most probable one is pneumonia. A cough may continue for several more weeks, the progression of chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, may be slowed, but an initial improvement in symptoms may be achieved.

For those with chronic disease and very young children preventive measures have a high importance so immunizations are highly recommended. If you are unsure about what type of medications are in over-the-counter cough syrups you should ask the pharmacist for an explanation. If you have these symptoms you are likely to develop acute bronchitis: dry, hacking unproductive cough that may change to a loose cough with increased mucus, runny nose, sore throat, back and other muscle pains, chills and low grade fever, headache and general malaise (feeling unwell). Wheezing after coughing is common.

About the Author
More informations about bronchitis symptoms or asthmatic bronchitis can be found by visiting http://www.bronchitis-guide.com/

Save Money And Refinish Your Hardwood Floors

Save Money And Refinish Your Hardwood Floors
by Christopher Smith

One of the reasons why people don't start home improvement projects because of the presumed cost of the project. Refinishing your wood floors doesn't have to be expensive. As a matter of fact, if you have some time, you can save yourself several dollars over what professionals will charge you.

The first step in refinishing your hardwood floors is removing all furniture, rugs, and mats that are on the floor. It's also a good idea to wear a dust mask as you are going to be stirring up quite the dust storm as you go about your business.

Your goal in refinishing your hardwood floors is to turn back the hands of time to when your hardwood floors were first installed. In order to achieve this feat, you will need to start by renting a heavy-duty sander to smooth out any rough spots and to remove the current stain that is on your floor. Move the sander in the direction that moves with the lines on your hardwood floor, paying particular attention that you do not apply more pressure anywhere. It's important to make sure that you apply equal pressure to all parts of your floor as you want to avoid creating 'pits' in your hardwood floor, which will require more sanding. Do not move across the hardwood floor lines, especially if you have small grooves or beveled edges.

At this point, have a look around you and you'll find that the room should be covered in dust particles. This is the part of the job that is never given the attention it needs. Its important that after you sweep and vacuum your hardwood floors, you will need to lightly wash it to remove all dust particles. Remember: the tiniest speck of dust or dirt will show up when you stain your floor. That tiny speck will be there until the next time the floors get refinished. Save yourself time and aggravation by doing it properly the first time.

After drying the floor you will be ready for the next step in the refinishing process. You have many options for the color of your stain depending on the type of wood you have and your personal preference or you can choose to leave it a natural color. There's also a relatively new protective coating for hardwood floors called polyurethane. You can choose high gloss or low luster depending on how shiny you prefer your floors. The more coats you put on, the glossier your finish will be. It is vital that you do not apply additional coats until the previous coat is completely dry.

While refinishing hardwood floors is time consuming, you do not have to move out of your home in order to accomplish it. The stains and protective coatings do not have harsh fumes so they are not dangerous to breathe. You do want to take care not to walk on your floor until it is completely dry. If you do not wait you will have wasted all that time and effort and have to either start over or try to hide the footprints.

About the Author
Find out more about installing hardwood floors, cleaning hardwood floors and hardwood floor refinishing how to before you start your project.

10 Cheap Dates to Spice Up Your Relationship

10 Cheap Dates to Spice Up Your Relationship
by Sarah Carrillo

Are you sick of the usual dinner-and-a-movie dates? Does your wallet scream in protest when you take it out to pay for your share of another over-priced meal? While you may think the only way to have fun is to continue draining your bank account every weekend, with our creative and inexpensive outings, you'll soon enjoy the idea of being a "cheap date."

Cheap Date Idea No. 1: Take a Cue from MTV's Cribs

Go to an upscale neighborhood near you and find an open house (meaning a real estate open house, not just an unlocked door obviously). Walk around and dream about actually living there or act like you already do and give each other the grand tour. For a swanky night in, ask your well-to-do friend with the gorgeous apartment to let you borrow it for the evening. You can make dinner and eat in style ... plus get some great decorating tips.

Cheap Date Idea No. 2: Booze it up for (Nearly) Free

See if you can find a winery or brewery in your area. (You'd be surprised how many towns have these now.) Most places offer tours and will let you sample their wares for little or no cost. Pretend to be experts and impress each other with words like "bouquet" (a way to describe the smell of wine) and "carbonic maceration" (the method in which most red wines are made).

Cheap Date Idea No. 3: Get Classy

Sign up for a free class. Stores like Williams and Sonoma offer cooking tutorials that you can see for free and hardware stores like Home Depot often offer classes on home repair and improvement. Not only are they free, but you'll learn skills that can save you money later on too!

Cheap Date Idea No. 4: Cycle the Day Away

Rent bikes--if you don't have your own--and explore your town or a nearby city. Bring a cheap picnic: baguette, red wine and chocolate. You'll feel like you're touring the French countryside (well, close enough).

Cheap Date Idea No. 5: Save Your Money for the Sugar

Make an inexpensive dinner at home (pasta perhaps?) and go out for a gourmet dessert and coffee date after. You can share a sundae or try that flourless chocolate cake you're always eyeing at your favorite restaurant.

Cheap Date Idea No. 6: Go Four Star on a Budget

Rendezvous in a posh hotel--just don't actually blow your savings staying there. Dress up so you look the part and spend the evening exploring the grounds, ordering drinks at the bar and enjoying the free bar food.

Cheap Date Idea No. 7: Do Something Good (for a Change)

Volunteering might not sound very romantic, but think about it: You get to see his sensitive side and he gets to see your good-girl side (you can save the bad-girl side for after). Whether you spend some time in a soup kitchen, cleaning up your local beach or park or babysitting (for free) for your stressed-out friend, you'll have spent quality time with your man that will definitely make you feel good about yourself too.

Cheap Date Idea No. 8: Travel to a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Or at least imagine you are while star gazing. Borrow an astronomy book from the library, lay out a blanket on a warm night and see how many constellations you can find.

Cheap Date Idea No. 9: Start the Day Right

Surprise him with a themed breakfast in bed--with a French twist. Bring up a tray with coffee, crepes, croissants and mimosas--wearing that cute French maid costume from Halloween last year.

Cheap Date Idea No. 10: Head for the (Tide) Pool

If you're lucky enough to have a beach near you, check its website for information on tide pool schedules. Spend a few hours looking for fun fish, hermit crabs and sea cucumbers. Bring a tide pool watch card so you will know what you're looking for, or study up ahead of time and impress him with your knowledge of invertebrates. Unfortuantely for most people, the thought of laying ceramic tile in their home imediately brings images of high installation bills to mind. But don't panic. You can install ceramic tile in your home for a fraction of the cost that most people will pay.

If you have never laid tile before, then I recommend that you do a little research first. Read a few articles and pick up how to lay tile video to watch. The easiest tile to install is floor tile. Try a countertop or small room first. The amount of tile will be small and you will get some practice before tackling a larger area, such as a kitchen. The most difficult part of the process will be taking out the plumbing fixtures.

Watch the video, decide on the room that you are going to lay tile in, and then visit the store. The tools and supplies will now seem familiar to you. Look over the tiles and the tools. Do not go overboard. In fact, you should not buy anything on your first trip. Talk to the salesman about the types of tile you are considering.

Choose your tile carefully. Make sure that you are choosing floor tile, which is skid-resistant, rather high-gloss wall tile. The salesperson at the home improvement or tile store can help you make the right choice for your room. I usually take a few sample tiles home to see how they look in the light of the room where I am going to install the tile. Just like paint and carpet, ceramic tile looks different at home than it does in the store. Consider the color of grout that will compliment your tile. Once you have decided on a tile, take careful measurements of the room and return to the store. Order your tile and prepare to get to work!

Set aside enough time to finish laying your tile within a few days. A bathroom floor should take no more than a weekend if you prep Friday night, lay the tile Saturday and grout it on Sunday. Larger rooms may take a little longer. And your first project will take longer than you think, so plan accordingly.

Once the ceramic tile floor has been laid, you will be thrilled. Your bathroom will have a whole new look and the value of your home will have increased. After a few weeks, take a very close look at your work. Make some notes about things that gave you trouble or things that you would do differently next time. Watch the video again, take some notes and get ready to tackle your next ceramic tile laying project.

About the Author
To read more about laying tile and improving the value of your home, read Tile Made Easy. Randy Davis has produced a great video that will guide you all the way through the process.

Makita Cordless Tools Are Excellent

Makita Cordless Tools Are Excellent
by Linden Walhard

If your child creates beautiful artwork and you want to highlight it in your home then you need to get the right lighting effect.

You should go with track lights if you want to get a great look in your home. When you choose track lighting you can get a room with a great mood and feel. These are not as clean and professional looking as those that are mounted in the ceiling, but you can't beat them for ease of installation.

If you want a more challenging installation of your mounting lights with a really great finished look then make sure you have the following materials and follow these simple steps:

-Drill / screwdriver

-Electrical cable and tape

-Ladder or stepstool

-Long-nose pliers

-Neon tester / voltage meter

-Tape measure

-Toggle bolts

-Track light kit

-Wire nuts

1.Make sure the power is shut down in your house. Make sure the power is off to the right junction box through the service area. Test to see if the circuit is dead with a voltage meter. Once you know it is securely turned off then you can take off the current fixture and remove the wires, keep the exposed bits away from each other.

2. Put the live bit into the track and tighten the setscrew. Put the end on mounting bracket. Use the pigtail leads to complete the wiring process. These pigtail leads is what the small wires that connect to the terminal are called. Wire nuts can be used to put the pigtail leads with the wiring. Put the black one onto the brass screw and the white one with the silver screw. The bare one should go to the green screw.

3. Decide on where to put the track. You can decide by seeing where the junction box is and where you want the light to hit. You can also buy Ts or angles but make sure the fittings you need are available by the company that has made your track lights. Mark the holes to note the spot. Make sure they are parallel to your wall by measuring correctly. Put them away from anything that could cause a fire. On the noted spots then put the drill holes.

4. Put the track up. Make sure the wires in the junction box and then snap it in place. Put the screws in place and then put the track up to the ceiling.

5. Put any extra sections of track lighting up and also put the end of the track in place. Put the electric adapter into your tract and screw it in place.

6. Put in the bulbs and you are almost ready to go. Make sure the wiring is all connected and the put the plate over the box and tighten everything.

Just turn on your power and aim your light anywhere in the room you want it! Luckily, there were sixty percent who were wise enough to plan and not end up in over their heads.

It's the truth, keeping a home improvement budget can be difficult, even more so when the home improvement shows that seem to constantly be on the television stir up and persuade you to go in deeper than you had planned on doing. They get you excited for the latest home appliance gadgets and the most expensive décor that you simply do not need, and likely can't afford. You may begin with good intentions to stick to your budget, but if you're not careful, with the influence of these shows you could likely end up stretching that budget well beyond your means, which will no doubt cause much financial stress later on.

This is simply something that nobody needs, don't you agree?

A good financial plan will give you the ability to expect extra expenses, which therefore will reduce the stress of home, your renovations. Experts advise that you should secure financing before the renovation, such as a personal or homeowners' line of credit, which give you the financial cushion that you need to keep stress levels low. However, just because you have a line of credit available doesn't mean that you should use it; it just provides extra security in case you hit unforeseen expenses, for instance re-wiring your home.

The survey showed that 68 per cent of respondents used cash from investments or savings to pay for their home improvements, however not planning could likely mean financial difficulty down the road. This survey also revealed that thirty four percent of homeowners are borrowing to finance their renovations.

Could a Home Improvement Show Devastate Your Marriage?

It looks like this may be the case according to a study done by a UK website called British Gas. They reveal that those who are attempting to emulate TV 'dream homes' could be turning DIY into fuel for divorce. More than half of our do it yourself craze is forged by the influence of TV shows. The bad news is that eighty percent of families admit to having had arguments over botched makeovers. That doesn't include all of the added arguments due to financial stress on these marriages, which is the greatest cause of divorce.

Bottomline, save yourself a ton of headache by creating a budget before starting any home improvement project, be strict with your budget, and don't let the shows that tout easy and simple renovation influence you, simply let it inspire you. Be savvy and keep your savings and your marriage.

About the Author
Kurt Schefken's news are found on various web pages with reference to power tools and woodworking schools. That includes the travel time to the local Nursery or Home Improvement store. Here are the steps to follow.

The Keys to making a successful Terrarium:

1. Select a container that is unique - This is one of the most important aspects of a terrarium. Often you will see a Brandy snifter as a terrarium container and this is perfect because it is very dramatic. Browse through the local nursery or home improvement store and look for something that is dramatic or unique. It could be anything that will hold soil and water. Think outside the box of "a Potted Plant." 2. Selection of plants - People often fret over which plants go with which plants and you should give this no thought at all. Select an odd number of plants such as 3, 5 or 7 and select them with a variety of leaf shapes. Some should have slender stalks and others should have round and full leaves. Try to vary the color of the plants too. As you are browsing for your plants place them side by side to see what they will look like in an arrangement. Does it look attractive? Do the plants compliment each other. Move the pots around and look for attractive arrangements.

Materials to Purchase

1. The container 2. 3,5,or 7 plants (this odd numbered arrangement tends to be more interesting than even numbered arrangements) 3. 1 bag of potting soil 4. 1 small bag of stones for the bottom of the terrarium (You can pick small stones the size of marbles from your backyard and save a bit of money here)

Making the Terrarium (The Steps)

1. Put a one inch layer of stones in the bottom of your terrarium 2. Fill the container about half full of potting soil 3. Remove the plants from their plastic pots and arrange them in your terrarium. Move this arrangement around looking for something that pleases you. 4. Once you have found an arrangement you like fill the rest of the container with potting soil and gently tap it down so it is firm and the plants are supported. 5. Water with a moderate amount of water. 6. Put the terrarium in a place with moderate or occasional sunlight

Caring for your terrarium

A terrarium is really easy to care for. Check on it every day and stick your finger in the soil. If it is dry then water it. Examine the bottom of the terrarium. If there is water among the stones then you should not water it for a few days.

Want your terrarium to last longer and be even hardier?

You can add a step to this whole process. When at the Store purchase a bag of something called Spaghnum Moss, (Or Spanish Moss) This is a stringy material. After you put your drainage rocks in the terrarium put a one-inch thick layer of the moss as if it were a carpet covering the rocks. Then add your soil. What this does is prevent the soil from slowly over time draining down into the rocks. It will keep the roots of your plants drier and healthier.

If you choose a really dramatic container and choose an attractive set of plants you can make a beautiful terrarium in one hour. And it is something you will really be proud of and other people will comment on how beautiful it is.

About the Author
For more interesting and creative terrarium projects and ideas visit the authors website at: Terrarium Man

Check Your Window Hardware

Check Your Window Hardware
by Ken Morris

When you think of your shutters, the last thing that you are concerned about is the shutter hinges. Well this is a completely wrong approach. In most cases we do not even consider them since it is very rare that the shutters are used or moved and as long as the hinge works, we are happy. Well this should just not be the case. The shutter hinges that are available now are state of the art and much more visually appealing than their predecessors. In most cases we do not even realize what our shutter hinge will look like or what kind of condition that it may be in. However we do nee to look at this periodically and determine if they function and look at it from the point of a buyer and try to determine what they would see, like, or dislike in reference to your shutters and your hinges. Maker sure that you inspect and check these hinges to make sure that they are working. At one point you too were the home buyer and you wanted to explore every inch of that home and what it brought to you.

Another item that we rarely look at in our homes and owe a lot more attention to is the window hardware. In many cases just like the shutter hinge, as long as the window will open and close and that the window locks we do not care very much about the window hardware. It is when something is actually wrong that we will finally go to take a look at it and realize that hey this could have been avoided if only we would have done some regular maintenance on them in the first place. If we do not do regular maintenance on the windows we may find ourselves doing some unwanted and unscheduled home improvement projects down the road. Simple oil and cleaning will work wonders to keep everything running smooth in most windows and costs little to no money to do so.

So by keeping up on regular tasks on these two items and by updating them as necessary you will be able to avoid a lot of headaches and problems for yourself down the road. Take into consideration all that needs to be done and how little time it will take to keep up on these things so you are not caught with a big surprise in the middle of the winter when you least expect it.

About the Author
Focusing on news and information about window hardware, Kenneth Morris works mostly for http://www.shades-blinds-shutters-guide.com. No one really knows what is going to happen next, and everything is pretty much completely unpredictable.

Now that everyone has pretty much agreed upon the fact that the market is indeed slowing down, the next question on everyone's mind is whether we are going to see an improvement in the future, or if we are going to see some more slowing before things start to pick up again.

Well, all of the data that is coming in is making things even more confusing and difficult to predict.

The most recent data shows us a variety of mixed signals concerning the health and vitality of our nation's housing market.

The most recent data coming in shows us both good and bad news.

As for the good news, according to a major trade association, sales of existing homes increased last month. As for the bad news, new home sales slowed.

A February 28, 2007 article by RISMedia.com, "Existing-home sales improve in January," looks at the latest numbers that are coming in concerning our housing market. "Sales of existing homes rose in January, reaching the highest level in seven months, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Total existing-home sales-including single-family, town homes, condominiums and co-ops - increased 3.0 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate1 of 6.46 million units in January from an upwardly revised pace of 6.27 million in December. Sales were 4.3 percent below the 6.75 million-unit level in January 2006."

Although we are seeing improvements in the exiting home sales, which is definitely good news for the market, we shouldn't get our hopes up to high.

Things are improving here, but there are other aspects of the housing market that are still declining. And surprisingly enough, one of the housing industry's most influential figures is sighting the strange weather we have been seeing as reason for these unpredictable numbers. "David Lereah, NAR's chief economist, said observers shouldn't overreact to the sales gain, or to other short-term effects. 'Although we're expecting existing-home sales to gradually rise this year, and buyers are responding to the price correction, some unusually warm weather helped boost sales in January,' he said. 'On the flip side, the winter storms that disrupted so much of the country in February could negatively impact the housing market.'"

Although many housing markets were essentially shut down for a while in February due to the extreme whether conditions, things should continue to pick up shortly. Only time will tell what will happen to our market in the future.

About the Author
For greater information about mortgage refinancing or more related subjects about refinancing or about home equity loan refinancing please review these links.

Home Treatment for Acne - Tips That Work

Home Treatment for Acne - Tips That Work
by Breyen Rhodes

Home treatment for acne can encompass many methods. The most obvious one is to cleanse your face twice daily, using soap and water. Using harsh chemicals will only aggravate the condition.

A proper diet is another home treatment for acne which entails restricting foods that are high in fat; oils; processed; contain sugar; and instead, opt for leafy green vegetables; fruits; water; omega 3 oils, and the like. Some even suggest limiting your caffeine intake will help as well.

While zinc and chromium as well as other vitamins are certainly good for you; there is an old treatment which still works today, and that is an oatmeal mask. In addition, some have suggested using cucumbers, when blended into a liquid, will also help acne conditions. Tea tree oil and other home remedies such as other antioxidants can have a positive effect in alleviate an acne condition.

Use an exfoliate twice a day; in the morning and at night, will reduce the chances of an acne condition because the exfoliate removes dead skin cells. Exfoliation should not be used if you have a mild acne condition. Try not to use make-up which includes harsh chemicals. In addition, multi-vitamins can afford you all of the supplements needed such as: vitamin A, which is an antioxidant and great for the skin.

If you find your condition does not clear up in a reasonable amount of time, you may want to consider using oral and topical antibiotics, if prescribed. You should see results within five to six weeks. If the condition worsens, your doctor will explain the more aggressive types of treatment available.

While there have been so many misconceptions about how to treat acne, one home treatment everyone does agree on is benzoyl peroxide. These are the most common topical medicines used to treat acne. Benzoyl peroxide is best at killing acne and may reduce oil production. Studies show, for some patients, over the counter medications may cause side effects. However, these side effects soon dissipate. Moreover, topical medications seem to help in treating acne when used on a regular basis. Most dermatologists agree it takes about 8 weeks or more before there is any noticeable improvement.

While acne can be a difficult condition to deal with, it can be treated and will eventually go away. Form babies to adults, acne conditions on harder to deal with for teens. However, if you follow some of these preventative measures, and include a healthy diet, chances are your acne will not progress any further.

About the Author
Battling acne problems? Evidence shows that the early Romans worked with concrete as early as 200 BC and as you might have already guessed, they used it to build their aqueducts and bridges.

In 1752, English engineer John Smeaton discovered how to make concrete waterproof and he used it to build the Eddystone lighthouse in England.

What Is Concrete?

Today, concrete is the most commonly used material in home improvement. Made from a mixture of sand, gravel, cement, and water, concrete is used to build things like walls, floors, and patio foundations. A special type of waterproof concrete is used for home improvement projects near water or an area that's exposed to moisture on a regular basis. A prime candidate for waterproof concrete work is a basement in the mid-west section of the country.

Concrete and Cement Are Not the Same

It's a common mistake, but many people call concrete, 'cement', when the two are very different. Cement is a powder made of a mixture of calcified limestone and clay, and it's used with water and sand or gravel to make concrete. Concrete - is made out of cement (and other things). Used interchangeably, most people understand that when we say that we need a cement job, we're actually referring to a concrete job.

Why We Build Things With Concrete

One reason is its strength. Concrete is famous for its ability to withstand heavy weight and pressure. That's why it's the most sensible choice for foundations that support homes or large quantities of water like swimming pools and the denser the concrete, the stronger it is. If you're experiencing cracked concrete, chances are it is the result of poor mixing - mixing with too much water that is.

Good strong concrete, such as that used to build a sturdy sidewalk or driveway for example, is mixed with just the right amount of water and is allowed to 'cure.' Concrete becomes stronger as long as it's allowed to sit and cure naturally without the use of artificial tools (fans, hot air, etc.). In fact, concrete is best cured by keeping it wet for a period of about three days.

In cold weather, contractors are careful not to let freshly laid concrete freeze by covering it with a tarp. But in areas where the weather is fiercely cold or in freezing temperatures, concrete is cured with hot air while still maintaining an appropriate amount of moisture.

Another reason why we use concrete is because it's inexpensive, it's elastic (at particular stages), and it will continue to harden even while wet. Better yet is its ease to work with. If the concrete is properly prepared (mixed correctly), it isn't difficult to manipulate.

From Pour to Finish

All in all, concrete will dry (cure) within a matter of days however if special agents, such as drying agents are mixed in with the concrete before it's poured, it could dry in as little as an hour. For maximum results, be sure to follow the instructions that your contractor gives you after getting a concrete job. There are just too many horror stories where customers were upset with the quality of a concrete job, only to find out that they were at fault for not following the contractor's care instructions!

About the Author
Author Paul White represents FloridaHomeBuild.com. Has it depressed you so much that you have actually considered selling your home? You are not alone. Many people live with that old, ugly wood paneling but that does not mean you have to. Here are some home improvement tricks you can do to rid of that unattractive paneling. Be sure to take your time to learn about the steps involved to ensure you get satisfactory results from your efforts, since it does require some hard work.

A first option is to paint the paneling. It is important to remember that you cannot simply paint the paneling without first preparing the surface. Without proper preparation, your paint will run and you may have yellow streaks. You should use a good cleaner to eliminate the build-up on the paneling. Then, apply a gloss remover small sections and rub in the direction of the grain. The gloss remover should set for at least thirty minutes, after which time you should apply the primer. Do not remove the gloss remover. The primer should be reapplied if the paneling is still showing through after the first coat is dry. Once the primer has dried overnight, add the caulking into the panel grooves and remove excess caulking with a putty knife. Let the caulking dry overnight as well. In the morning, you will be ready to start painting your first coat of regular paint. Let the paint dry according to that brand's directions and apply a second coat if necessary.

A second option is to apply wallpaper that can be painted. This is a great way to give your home the appearance of a painted wall with the color of your choice. Apply a good degreaser to the paneling and let it dry. Once it is dry, you will need to fill in the panel grooves with caulking to give a smooth appearance and rid of any ridges. Use a putty knife to scrape away the excess caulk to provide the paper a smoother, firm surface to stick to. You must then apply a good primer to the surface. Of course, you must size the wallpaper to fit your walls and then hang the wallpaper according to the directions. You will then be ready to paint your wall, but be sure to follow the instructions from the manufacturer for painting wallpaper.

Finally, you can always add a shine to your paneling by glazing it. As above, you should first clean the paneling with a degreaser. You would then paint the paneling in a color of your choice and let it dry overnight. Next, mix a satin top color with a glaze according to the instructions to ensure you mix the correct proportions of both. Online remortgage is a secured loan. Online remortgage aims to arrange a new mortgage, pay off your existing lender and gain some additional capital in the process. It is a legal way of saving some money and raising some fresh capital. The main reason of going for online remortgage is with so much of competition in loan market. For this you are to complete the application form and you are with a suitable lender who offers you the loan amount at a reasonable interest rate. The remortgage is more suitable when the borrower is with a comparative interest rate, repayable term, and monthly repayment amount.

There are few reasons for which one goes for online remortgage are-- 1. Online remortgage does not increase the size of the loan. But moving to a more competitive deal reduces your monthly outgoings.

2. Online remortgage helps to release equity tied up in your collateral. This enables you to get a large lump sum which you may use in extending your property or buying a second property.

3. Online remortgage can even be used to repay the existing debts at a competitive interest rate. This increases the size of the loan amount and even the loan period.

The borrowers looking for online remortgage can opt for the services of independent remortgage brokers. Remortgage brokers are well aware of the market trends and can help you get a better deal at a low interest rate and easy repayable term.

Online remortgage can be used by the borrower for many reasons like-- 1. Home improvement 2. Debt consolidation 3. Business use 4. Emergency cash etc 5. Divorce settlements

Remortgage can be availed to people with bad credit, CCJs, bankruptcy, without any income proof etc. As such remortgage of property requires legal and valuation process similar to when you are purchasing a property. The amount of remortgage depends on your current mortgage.

Before going for a remortgage checkout that the current lender does not charge any redemption penalties for moving your mortgage. Thus remortgage helps an individual to come out of extra debts and manage his financial requirements in a better and effective manner.

About the Author
George Cummings works as financial advisor in Poor Credit Remortgage Loan. However, before you start getting out the hammer and nails or hiring a contractor consider if your home improvements may be eligible for a home improvement tax deduction.

The first thing the homeowner must understand is the difference between a home improvement and a home repair. Simply put, a home repair is classified as fixing a problem. For example, repairing a hole in the roof, fixing a leak or repainting a room would be considered repairs. On the other hand, remodeling a kitchen, adding a couple of rooms, building a garage or installing a swimming pool would be classed as improvements. These improvements add to the living amenity of the home's owners and usually add value to the home.

The Internal Revenue Service sets out strict guidelines on how a homeowner can claim a home improvement tax deduction. It is strongly recommended that before you hire a contractor or start any home improvement works that you obtain advice from you tax consultant or from the local office of the IRS

Tax deductions for home improvements can fall into any of several different categories. A medical condition that required providing disabled access to home would normally be classed as a home improvement.

There is a special home improvement tax deduction for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Consult with the IRS regarding the Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act as it increases the permitted qualifying home improvement loans.

If you are planning a home improvement to an area of your home that is in need of repair you may be able to include the repair as an improvement. The Tax Act states that where a repair is carried out in the same area of the home that is being remodeled then the repair can be included as part of the improvement project. So, if you are planning on remodeling your kitchen don't forget to take care of the leaking pipes at the same time and claim the entire project as a deduction.

Tax Credits vs Tax Deduction

Tax credits can also provide significant savings to the homeowner. Whilst a tax deduction for home improvement can reduce the amount of income on which tax ist payable, a tax credit directly reduces the tax itself. Tax credits are available for many types of home improvements. For example, installing insulation, adding energy-efficient windows, and some types of highly efficient equipment for cooling and heating, and solar water heating may all qualify for tax credits.

The IRS has many helpful publications to assist homeowners who are about to embark on home improvements so a visit to their website or calling into a branch office will usually provide the homeowner with a wealth of information.

And when you begin your home improvements remember to maintain accurate records of spending and save all receipts ... this will assist you enormously when the time comes to claim your home improvement tax deduction.

About the Author
Alison Stevens is an online author and maintains The Home Improvement Website to assist homeowners with tips and information about home improvements

Bathroom Remodeling Tips

Bathroom Remodeling Tips
by Kelvin Williams

Tips For Remodeling A BathroomThe following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with bathroom Remodeling. Many of us put up with dingy bathroom that may have leaky fixtures, peeling paint, stained floors, or poor lighting because it all still works and no one sees it but us anyway. That doesn't have to be the case. Just because it works should be no excuse to leave it alone when you really don't like the way it looks. It may work to keep a worn out but comfy pair of jeans, but you still would not wear them out to an important function. Your bathroom may be making a statement to your guests that you would rather not be saying. If you can't do the work yourself, hire a professional that has good recommendations from people you know.

Decide what you would like in your remodeled bathroom. Everyone seems to be enjoying larger bathrooms recently. If the budget and surrounding area allows it, you could enlarge the bathroom by a few feet. In the past bathrooms were purely functional with just enough space to take care of business. Now, we have such busy lives that we like to escape in the luxury of a large bathroom to relax in a bubble bath.

You may decide to add light, whether natural or artificial. You could enlarge or add a window for more sunlight. You could also add a variety of lighting for different uses. Dim lighting would be nice for a relaxing bath, but bright lights will be needed for shaving. More light will also make the bathroom seem larger if you could not expand the room as much as you would like.

It's really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of bathroom Remodeling. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Consider refurbishing your old cabinets. If they are in good shape, you could just refinish them. Using a lighter color will add to that spacious look. You could also add a new top to replace stained, out dated counter top. Marble can add a beautiful look to your bathroom that will have guests saying, "Wow!".

A really nice comfort to add is radiant heat. With the heat under the flooring, you never have to worry about stepping barefooted onto a cold floor first thing in the morning. This is a costly addition, but radiant heating is efficient and can save money after the initial sticker shock.

If you are now motivated to remodel that old bathroom, you are ready to start comparison-shopping at various home improvement stores. They may have displays that will give you an idea of looks that appeal to you and those that are not so appealing. You can also check out a few decorating and home improvement magazines to find more ideas. After doing your homework, you will have in mind exactly what you want to make it easier for your contractor to satisfy you. Now you can understand why there's a growing interest in bathroom Remodeling. When people start looking for more information about Remodeling thier bathroom, you'll be in a position to meet their needs.

[TAGS]Home Improvement,bathroom remodeling tips,improvement tips,remodeling,improvement,bathroom tips [/TAGS]

<ahref="http://homeimprovementfor.us/Bathroom Remodeling Tips /">Bathroom Remodeling Ideas made easy

About the Author
For more info. on this subject goto this website: http://homeimprovementfor.us/bathroom-remodeling-tips/

Home Improvement Projects To Save You Money

Home Improvement Projects To Save You Money
by Mark Justice

Did you know that there are a number of home improvement projects that you should consider that will help you to save money in the long run? If you plan to invest in having a home improvement project completed, then it makes sense for you to do so for the benefit of added dollars in your pocket. How can you do this? Think about the energy savings you can gain through a few small projects.

Saving Indoors

Your largest benefit in energy savings will come from drafty windows. If you want to save money on energy, more than 25% of the energy you use to heat and cool your home goes through those windows. By installing new, double pained and high quality windows, you will drastically improve your home's energy bills.

To save on heating bills for hot water, wrap your hot water tank. Insulating the tank with the right material will save you a good amount of money. In fact, you can save a considerable amount just by wrapping the pipes that lead from the hot water tank throughout the faucets in your home. Here, the investment of money and time is very small compared to the return.

Having a well running furnace can also help. Keeping air ducts clean and well maintained will help. In addition, determine if your unit is old or needs repair. If so, you will save considerably with an investment of a new furnace.

Saving Outdoors

Want to add beauty to your lawn and still improve your energy bills? Place three trees around your yard. Adding three trees that will shade and protect your home will give your home shade in the summer months, lowering the temperature more than one degree. In the winter, they will serve as wind breakers for improving the amount of energy lost by the cold. Just with trees!

Investing in a few of these home improvement projects for your home, can save you money. In most cases, you will save a considerable amount of money by just investing wisely. In addition, maintaining the systems within your home will help to cut your costs. You are not using less or losing the control over your home here, but rather just giving yourself a few added dollars in your pocket each month.

About the Author
Mark Justice is a do-it yourselfer, that does it for fun and PROFIT! There are several reasons for this. 1. They want to improve the look or function of their home to make it a better or more ideal place for them to live. 2. They need to make repairs to keep the house and up and running well. 3. They want to add value to their home's bottom line through upgrades.

But, do home improvement projects really add money to the value of a home? There are several different reasons that it can and several reasons that it may not. For each individual, the specific considerations must be considered. What are you planning to improve? How will you improve it? What is the value of the investment over what was already there?

There are many things to ask yourself when looking to increase the value of your home through home improvement projects. One of the most important things is knowing what will actually improve the value. Here are some things to think about in that regard.

* Does the home improvement project add space, function or added benefits to the area? * Does the home improvement project make the area more attractive, not only to you but to others? * Does the home improvement project make significant positive changes to the home?

Each of these things is something to take into consideration. If you were to walk into a home like yours without the improvement project in it, would you pay more for the home if it did have this feature? Of course, what your thoughts are do not matter as much as what the potential buyer's thoughts are either. Since the value of a home is more defined by the actual way that it is valued by the buyer, if your home is for sale, then it is really up to pleasing them with these projects.

One way to learn more about the value of your potential home improvement project is to talk to a home appraiser. Locate one that is licensed and talk to them about the potential added value to your home through the home improvement project. What you must realize, though, is that adding $10,000 to your home through this investment does not mean that the value of your home goes up that much. It could be more. It could also be much less too.

About the Author
Mark Justice is a do-it yourselfer, that does it for fun and PROFIT! Sometimes, guys come to me instead of other guys who do what I do. There is a reason for that and for now I'll give you one reason why.

One morning, I was into my second cup of coffee and catching some news in the background while browsing through a handful of mail. My phone rang a few times and I hollered at my secretary that I was busy. But, we have an informal work relationship and she told me that she was in the middle of something herself. So, I picked up the phone.

It was a guy on the phone who needed some home improvement advice. Well, that's what I do. So, he had called the right person. But, it seemed that it was hard for him to get the question out of his mouth. After several attempts, he had worded enough to say, "Can you come look at my house and I'll explain things there."

That's not a hard proposition. I met him a few hours later at his house. We walked through and my thought was, "There's nothing to this place." It was functional, totally utility. It had everything you need. Nothing you really want.

But, that's none of my business. I was there to hear the question and give my best possible answer. After meeting with the guy and walking around his home, talking about different rooms, he finally came out with what he had been trying to ask all day. It was awkward how he worded it, so I'll put my own spin on the question.

"How do I make my home a little more romantic?"

Of course, the answer was easy for me. I'm a woman and I know what I would like to see in a man's house if I am dating him. But, now you can see why it was a little difficult for him to ask me in the first place. He knew to come to me. He wouldn't even begin to ask another guy that question. But, it was even hard for him to just come out and let me know that was why he was seeking my advice.

So, I began. I had to consider the fact that he was a man and had to put forth a manly presence in his own home. But, he needed to dress things up a little to make the atmosphere more welcoming to the women he was dating. Pictures on the wall would be a nice place to start.

Now, I'm a home improvement expert, which means that construction and carpentry are more up my line of business. But, I don't have a problem taking a few minutes out of my day to help a guy with home décor issues. I started with describing to him what kinds of pictures would do great.

Flowers aren't what you want. You're a guy. Flowers are nice for a woman. But, for a guy living alone and wanting to date Women, flowers don't quite say what you want to say. However, nice tranquil pictures of ships at sea in the dusk hours when the sun is beginning to set says, "I'm a guy with a bit of class." Pictures of kids are great. Even if you don't have kids, pictures of your nephews and nieces say that you love kids. You want a woman to melt? Tell her you love kids.

Plants and nice animals are other big turn-ons. You don't have to have coffee table center pieces. Again, you are trying to let her know that you are all man, but that there is a classy side to you. Put a tree in the corner. Bamboo palms or birches are perfect examples of trees that you can put in the corner. Put a geranium in your window. You've got the plants covered.

Moving to the animal department, a big scary Rottweiler won't help your cause. But, something like a nice looking Golden Retriever hits the soft spot. The woman you are trying to romance will feel like kicking off her shoes, curling up on your couch and petting your dog while you carry on a half decent conversation with her. Now, all you need to do is complete the atmosphere.

Have a warm, welcoming fireplace in your living room where you can both get comfortable and actually feel the romance between you. But, my client was a renter and his home didn't have a fireplace. Nor would anyone in that situation want to invest into a fireplace for a landlord and not be able to take it with you when you move. That's why I'm loving these ventless gel fireplaces more and more. They seem to popup in every conversation I have with a client. It is the perfect solution for a romantic evening without all the hassle of the installation, maintenance and mess of traditional wood burning fireplaces.

That basically scratches the surface of our conversation. We talked about more things than that, but you get the gist. If you can set a mood in your home that says I'm all man, but I have a romantic and inviting side, then you have your dating life beat. The women you date will be more likely to want to spend more time with you. That's really all you want, isn't it? Fit your romantic atmosphere to your life. Don't be a fake!

If you don't have kids and your brothers and sisters don't have kids, don't start putting pictures of kids up all over the place. She'll ask who they are. You'll get a special look when you admit that you don't know. But, that's not a good thing. Just follow the model though. You have to have things adorning your walls that say, "You're not boring."

Not everyone can have a dog. But, fish and turtles are fine too. Use your imagination and get a pet that fits your lifestyle. There are plenty of types of animals that say to a woman you care about more than just yourself.

A fireplace is perfect for the romance you are trying to invite. There is nothing that competes with it. You can have music. You can have candles. But, a fireplace says that you have class and you know what you want. Nothing turns a woman on more than a man who knows what he wants.

There is no stupid question. If you don't ask, you'll never know. But, I'd be willing to bet that I get the weirdest questions of anyone in my line of business and that's just what I have to deal with. In fact, I love it!

About the Author
Jessica Brylan is a home improvement expert. She loves remodeling homes. She has even built a few. In all her work, she has split off into interior design every once in awhile. But, actual construction is her first love. These Home Improvements are so simple that anyone can do it. by C.J.Gannon

Wouldn't be nice to know if people are saying nice things or bad things about your home? Some people will draw a comparison between you and your home. Today image is everything. Most people want their homes to look like a showplace. This is why TV shows that do home makeovers are so well-liked. Ask yourself these questions: Is your house a makeover? Did you purposely buy that fixer-upper because you thought that you could do the work yourself? Did your spouse start a project and not finish it? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you at least admitted that you have a problem. This problem, no matter how big it is, is something that you can fix or have fixed.

It would be nice if everyone that needed an update on their home could get one via these ever popular home makeover shows. Obviously since this is not going to happen, you have two options. Go to your local hardware/home store and try to get some help to do it yourself. Remember, do-it-yourself places will only guide you in the process; they will not be able to assist you any further than that, but this is a much cheaper way to get the job done if you are handy. You can also get in touch with your local builder or contractor and get a quote on the job. Find out how much work and how much money is involved in order to improve your home's and your self's image. Once you have an idea about the extent of the makeover and the cost of it, then the next step would be to figure out how you are going to pay for the job to be done. The options are save, save, and save that money until you have enough, take out a second mortgage, or apply for a home loan. Here are some tips to remember when looking for financing for your home improvement project. It is important to remember to shop around before jumping at the first quote that you like. Make sure to gets several quotes for your job. Also, consider doing your home improvement during the down season for contractors as this will save you a bundle of money. You always have to prepare yourself for any cost overruns as well. When you budget for your home improvement, you may want to save or borrow an amount that is above the quoted price that the builder gave you. No matter what your home improvement project is or how you decide to finance it, remember image and increasing the value of your property is your goal. No matter what you do, whether it's a smaller project like repainting the house or something bigger like a room addition onto the home, it will do wonders for yourself and your neighbors alike. You will then not have to worry about what others say about you and your castle.

About the Author
C.J.Gannon is a Retired Residential General Contractor and now writes for several construction companies to educate buyers on the construction process so that consumers can make decisions with confidence about their Home Improvement Projects.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://askthebuilder.blogspot.com/2007/01/become-jones-let-neighbors-try-to-keep.html' title='Become the Jones, Let the Neighbors try to keep up. The way that we decorate and the various items that we place in our homes show what our tastes are like. One such way to give a statement about our lifestyle habits is the different types of carpets and accent rugs that we have placed in our homes. These carpets come in many styles and colors.
You will also find accent rugs in modern and vintage style designs. There are also accent rugs that can be used for various parts of your house. For instance you will be able to place an accent rug in your entry way or foyer. Here the accent rugs will add some color to this section of the house and protect the floor or carpet underneath from this very high traffic area.
In addition to providing color and protection for your entry way there are different styles of accent rugs that you can use here. Since accent rugs are made from a number of different materials you can choose the one that will most suit the area. You should take into account the type of flooring or base that your accent rug will be placed on. For wood floors you will need to provide a rug pad underneath the accent rug so that you will not find your self slipping across the room when you step on it.
Besides using accent rugs for high traffic areas you can use these rugs as part of your décor styling. Accent rugs will make a wondrous difference to your décor as you can brighten plain neutral colors with an accent rug that blends in the various accessories in your rooms. Accent rugs can be used to draw attention to various sections or features in different parts of your home.
The other great thing about buying and using accent rugs is that you can use different types of accent rugs for every season, your various moods and style desires. You can even move the accent rugs to enhance your existing carpets and rugs at home. There is also one other fact about accent rugs that you really should consider. Unlike normal large carpets which tend to stay in the house even when you are moving, accents rugs are portable.
This means that when you move into your brand new home all that you need to do is decorate your home and lay out your accent rugs to create that stunning look that you love. By the time that you have finished settling in you will see that it is time to buy some more great looking accent rugs.
About the Author
Muna wa Wanjiru is a web administrator and has been researching and reporting on Internet Marketing for years. Which Is Right For You?

New Construction Windows Or Replacement Windows? Which Is Right For You?
Hello, my name is John Rocco.I grew up around the window and door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every aspect of residential and commercial glass.Naturally, when it came time to choose a profession, i wound up in the window and door business.I have been in the business for about 27 years, and i have been self employed for 20.
One of the things that separated my company from my competitors was my willingness to show my customers how to replace their windows themselves. Whenever i would encounter a customer with a curiosity or willingness to learn how to install their own windows,i would offer to sell them the labor on one window, using them as my helper. Then, they would install the rest of the windows using the knowledge gained from helping me install one. Most window companies would never do this because there is so much money made on the labor. But i was always so busy,i never felt like it was costing me money.
Eventually, i made an installation video for those homeowners who wanted to do their own windows. While the video is for sale on my website, i decided to take excerpts from the video and write an article once a week covering some part of the window replacement project. This article is going to cover the difference between window frames used in new construction homes, and the window frames that are used to replace existing aluminum or wood windows.
When a new home is being built, the windows are nailed to the wood studs that make up the house frame. In order to accomplish this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud and nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After that, flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks, then the exterior material is applied. That material can be stucco, brick, siding, etc.
Now,imagine 10 or 20 years later when you want to replace those windows. If you were going to install your replacement windows the same way the original windows were installed, you would have to remove the exterior material around each window in order to get to those nails holding the frame in there. You can see how this procedure could cause many problems, not to mention all the labor involved. I have seen homes in california with stucco exteriors where the homeowner had the stucco cut out in order to remove the old windows. The problem was they were unable to match the stucco colors after patching. Its just not a very efficient way to replace windows. So the replacement frame was designed.
In most parts of the country it's simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed. In the west, where stucco is a common home exterior,a retrofit frame was designed. If you're going to be replacing the exterior material on your home, then you might want to consider going with the new construction window since the nailing fins will be exposed anyway. Also, chances are that a contractor will be doing your exterior replacement, and it would be wise to let the contractor install the windows as well.Since my installation videos deal with window replacement only, these articles will focus on replacement frames and retrofit frames. Using these two frame styles,a do it yourselfer can replace their old windows without any damage to existing interior and exterior surfaces. And the job can be done using common tools such as a drill, tape measure, and caulking gun.
In next weeks article,we will discuss the replacement of wood sash windows.
John Rocco has been installing replacement windows since 1978
To learn more, visit http://www.vinylwindowsforless.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://askthebuilder.blogspot.com/2007/01/new-construction-windows-or-replacement.html' title='New Construction Windows Or Replacement Windows? A badly designed, ill-equipped and cluttered kitchen is likely to affect the peace of mind of an otherwise happy couple. A functionally efficient kitchen makes cooking a pleasurable activity instead of drudgery.
Kitchen remodeling improves the usefulness of the home and adds value and equity to both older and newer homes. Almost every kitchen has a design flaw or something that can be changed to make the space more workable.
With kitchens increasingly becoming the center of social and functional activities, kitchen remodeling has gained importance in the life of many families. Kitchen remodeling becomes challenging if you are on a tight budget or faced with space restrictions.
The findings of a recent research project sponsored by the National Kitchen and Bath Association throw significant light on the role of women and their spouse in the kitchen, which helps planners in charting workable models for modern kitchens. The survey revealed that most women now work outside the home, share the cooking, prepare very few foods from scratch and require storage space for 800 items.
The NKBA has issued a 31-point guideline for industry professionals with minimum standards for kitchen efficiency, convenience, traffic spaces, distances between items, and countertop and cabinet space.
There are three basic kitchen functions to consider and arrange to create an ideal kitchen: storage, preparation and cleanup. Counter space, storage, built-ins, rollout pantry and sinks are the important elements of a kitchen. The functionality of a kitchen depends largely on these elements.
A well-thought-out, detailed plan is a must for any kitchen remodeling project. Formulating a plan is the first step, whether you design the kitchen yourself, work with a cabinet distributor or home center, or go to a kitchen designer. Without a complete and detailed plan developed before the kitchen renovation begins, you may get swept into a spending spiral of unbudgeted extras.
Kitchen Remodeling Info provides detailed information about kitchen remodeling ideas and costs, including small kitchen remodeling ideas, kitchen cabinet remodeling, and more. The impression of most people is they don't really know enough to build their own home. Let's face it, most of us know a little about the process. Some of us may know a lot about one aspect or the other involved in building a home. You may know how to paint or do carpentry work or lay tile, but you probably don't know everything about home building.
What is so different about building a home than the rest of major tasks that we take on in our everyday lives? Right now I am typing on my laptop over a wireless connection that is networked to the Internet. Do I know how all this works? Nope, I just knew how to put it all together and eureka, I can do it! Well we all know it is not that simple sometimes with computers, but my point is you don't need to know everything about something to do it.
In this age of the Internet with it's endless sources of information and connection to other people that have the knowledge you need, almost anything is possible. So why is building your own home any different? It isn't really, let me tell you why. First a little background about the building process.
Most of us buy a home that is built by a builder, or general contractor. The General Contractors hire Sub-Contractors to do the work, or essentially build the homes. The Subs put up the framing, roofing, siding, flooring etc? Normally the General contractors employ building supervisors to watch over the building process. They are the managers that have day-to-day contact with the subs. This process is not really complicated.
So what is so mysterious about building your own home? What do the builders have access to that you don't? Nothing, this is the fact that not to many people know. I built my own home. Am I some kind of rocket scientist, not hardly? The fact is you can save thousands of dollars and have the home of your dreams. We saved 40% and have a beautiful home that is exactly what we wanted.
You have access to the Building Contractors, House Plans, land, materials and financing. You just don't know it! You see the General Contractors just put it all together and present it to the masses, at a hefty markup of course!
Building your own home is very similar to all the other important tasks that you have mastered in your life. You study the information follow a process and commit to the task. Is it easy no, is it worth it, yes.
For more information about Building Your Own Home visit http://www.build-yourown-home.com/.
George Stevens is the popular author of the Website http://www.build-yourown-home.com/ teaching you how to build your own home.

Tips for Choosing Log Furniture

Tips for Choosing Log Furniture
If you just love that rustic look, and are finally ready to finally buy log furniture for your home, there are a number of "rules of thumb" that can help you in making good choices.
Begin by considering the overall style of your home. Do you have a log home that is overwhelmingly rustic? Or are you seeking to add a rustic touch to one or more rooms of a more conventional home?
Size is Everything
Homes that feature large logs, spacious ceilings or are roomy in general require a different flavor of rustic furniture than their more conventional counterparts. If large logs make up the walls of your room, or you have a fireplace made from monster rocks from Montana, you'll need a massive log look for your furniture as well. Otherwise, your log furniture will seem dwarfed and insignificant.
Even if the home for your log furniture is a cabin with 8-inch logs, a few large pieces of furniture will look better than many small ones. Larger furniture makes a room feel full without being cluttered.
If your bedroom has a high cathedral ceiling, a log canopy bed can help fill out the dimensions. There is also much you can do with artwork and lighting to make the best use of your space.
Types of wood
A variety of wood types are used to create rustic furniture. Following is an overview of several which are available on our website:
Steam-bent Hickory
Hickory is a very durable, flexible wood. Many a child has climbed to the top of a green hickory sapling to ride it down as it yields to the weight without breaking. When heated with steam for a period of time, Hickory poles can easily be formed into various unique pieces of furniture. The steamed poles are placed in a jig and left to dry. They will become very rigid and retain this shape when dry.
Steam-bent hickory is strong enough to be used for tools such as hammers and axes, and unpeeled hickory accounts for one of the best-selling lines of log furniture. The Amish use steam-bent hickory to make dining room chairs, as the legs for dining room tables, coffee tables, and rockers.
Northern White Cedar
Northern White Cedar grows in Northern Michigan and Canada. It withstands the abuse of seasonal elements without breaking down or rotting like other woods. It is a beautiful light tan color when freshly milled.
It turns silvery-gray with age, but can be treated with a good quality finish to help retain its color. You will notice cracks- some small and some larger in your rustic furniture. This occurs naturally in the drying process and adds to the rustic look of our products. These cracks do not diminish the function or design of our furniture. They are not a manufacturing defect, just a natural part of seasoning, enhancing the beauty of the wood.
Red Cedar
The most surprising thing about Red Cedar (also know as Aromatic Cedar) is that it is not a member of the cedar family at all, instead belonging to the juniper family. Everyone knows the deep aromatic smell of the red cedar. The wood is heavy, and naturally insect and rot resistant.
Clothes stored in a chest made of red cedar will be protected from moths. Red cedar has tight knots that add character and beauty. It is sometimes purple, but most often a brownish red that will in time become browner even when preserved. Furniture built with red cedar will last a long time and can definitely be handed down from generation to generation.
Shopping for Quality
Not all log furniture is created equal-no matter how stylish or comfortable it may be. The quality of the materials used in log furniture, and the craftsmanship employed, vary widely-and this is often reflected in the price. While there are always some bargains to be had, it is quite true that you get what you pay for in log furniture.
With this thought in mind, buy the best furniture you can. It will look better and last longer if you do. In addition, look for all-wood or solid-wood furniture (as opposed to veneered plywood or particle boards). Solid wood furniture tends to show less wear at the joints and fittings, and also reacts better to seasonal moisture changes.
Look for well-fitted, carefully crafted connections. Dove-tailed drawers are especially known for holding together well. If you want your furniture to be finished, look for a long-lasting, tough and evenly applied coating. A word to the wise: unless you are experienced in applying furniture finish, leave the finishing up to the furniture manufacturer.
Choosing a Log Furniture Store
Let the buyer beware-there is a wide variety of customer service between log furniture stores. If you are looking to buy on line, look for a store where quality furniture and customer service are both top priorities. I have seen log furniture manufacturers and stores that always deliver late, and I have seen some who deliver on-time with shoddy quality.
Look for testimonials on the site you are considering. Call and talk to a salesman at the log furniture store. A word to the wise-log furniture websites that merely drop ship log furniture have a lot less control over quality than those who building, finish and/or ship the furniture themselves.
The ideal online log furniture store has many repeat customers who not only purchase again from their store, but recommend them to others. Quality stores are interested in more than a quick sale. They understand the value of delivering top-quality log furniture-furniture that will last a lifetime and add a truly rustic touch to your home.
About The Author
Cari Haus has been successfully selling log furniture on the Internet since 1997. A lively place full of warmth and chatter is what makes a 'House' a 'Home'. There are times when we overlook some important details to give that 'Designer Touch' to our houses. Household accidents, unhealthy personal conditions and lack of family activities are the result.
To avoid such a situation, take care to make your house a comfortable and healthy place to live in. Look around you and observe carefully if any difficulty and threats are being posed due to faulty placement and wrong choice of objects. Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Rubber Mats: Though not much decorative, rubber mats are the best things to have outside your bathroom or near the kitchen sink. They will help avoid slipping and add safety to your home. Never use any kind of rugs at the top or bottom of stairs.
2. Work Delegation Diary: Keep a diary in a conspicuous place and write down in it, the daily chores of all members. Make sure everyone takes turn feeding the pet, mowing the lawn, dusting the furniture and setting the dinner table.
3. Sitting Space: Keep some extra, light-weight chairs or stools that can be carried to any place to make immediate sitting space. Garden sitting space, preferably under a tree or any other shade, is a lovely idea for spending family time. Get cane chairs or a bench placed in your garden. Chairs and a table in the porch is another great idea.
4. Door Knobs: Round door knobs give your room a nice appeal, but are down on the Comfort-level. Children and Elders suffering with Arthritis etc. find if difficult to grip them. They are also difficult to grasp with wet hands. They can be replaced with Lever Handles both on the inside as well as the outside for ease and comfort.
5. Showers: Though showers are top on Elegance list and Hand Showers are blamed for 'spoiling the look' with their long hose, there cannot be anything better than an adjustable hand shower with a hose for bathing big dogs and kids.
6. Lighting: Make sure that all your rooms have ample light. Reserve subtle lighting and other lighting effects for special occasions and parties. Good, clear light helps maintain everyone's health care easier and is especially good for school-going children and elderly people.
7. Artifacts: The next time you see your little kid hardly daring to breath when passing by your favorite antique lamp for the fear of breaking it, you know its the time for a revamp. Place glass objects and other breakable treasures in safer areas so your family members can move freely without worrying about spoiling your decor.
8. Comfort Level: At all times, keep in mind that your home needs to be comfortable and not rigid. Things get monotonous when they are 'too perfect'. A cozy nook by the window with a small coffee table, extra pillows thrown in for a comfortable t๊te-เ-t๊te, a sparkling fireplace with a warm rug sprawled across are some examples.
9. Family Space: A 'Home' is all about a family! Include in your design/decor, special 'Family' places like a sufficiently large dinner table, a card table for indoor games etc. Like I said above in 'Sitting space', a mini dining table or wicker table-chair set in your garden or under a tree in the backyard is a lovely idea. If you have a spare room for your crafts, make a separate shelf for Family crafts like Scrapbooking. A Wall Gallery of photos is a great way to bind family members - past and present.
You know what works best for your family. So develop this list further according on the needs of your family and watch your pretty house take the shape of a 'Pretty Home'.
Lata Tokhi is the Founder and Editor of Dot Com Women - a popular women's website, Celebrating Christmas - a resource for celebrating Christmas in style and I Love to Craft - a website full of free craft projects and ideas. For instance, I had a case where my client, an elderly and blind woman, signed a contract and paid $30,000.00 to a home improvement company that disappeared with all of her money! Unfortunately, the company was a scam operation, my client lost her life's savings and it will take some time in court before my client may ever see her money again however, her mistake will be a lesson to all of you because this article explains how to protect yourself from home improvement fraud.
Before signing any contract with a home improvement company, first ask that company for its license number and check it out with your State or County Consumer Affairs' Business License Division. Find the License Division on the web or call information and get their number. You want to find out (1) the name and address of the company associated with the license number given to you, (2) if the company is currently licensed and the license expiration date and (3) whether any complaints have been made against that company. The answers to those questions will help you determine if you want to proceed with signing a contract. Make sure both the contractor and the company he works for are licensed to work in your State.
If your going to sign the contract then make sure certain things are included pursuant to your understanding and as required by your State's Home Improvement Business Law. The contracting company's name, address and phone number should be printed on the contract. Also, it is important that the contracting company's home improvement license number is printed on the contract and that it is not different from the number you called and inquired about with Consumer Affairs. Lastly, make sure that all of the work to be performed is listed in the contract and that the approximate start and end dates of work are included. You should put a penalty clause in the contract regarding the contractor's failure to timely complete the work because contractors are notorious for starting jobs and then leaving for a few days or weeks to do other jobs while you sit and wait in your dismantled kitchen for him to return. Once the contract terms are satisfactory then the contract should be signed by both you and the company's representative.
An example of a consumer protection law is New York's General Business Law ง771 ("GBL") requiring all home improvement contracts shall be in writing and contain certain terms of payment, fees for services and materials and start and completion dates, among other terms. GBL ง771 is a consumer protection statute to prevent the misunderstandings between contractor had consumer and to protect the consumer from overreaching of the contractor, such as charging for work that was not agreed upon. GBL ง771 limits the contractor who disregards its written contract requirements to satisfactorily proving to a court each and every item of work he did and the reasonable value of each item by detailed invoices, timesheets and proof of hourly rates, among other proofs. So, if the contractor who failed to put your home improvement work in writing attempts to collect $20,000.00 from you, he has to prove the value of his services in detail before scaring you into paying an amount you had no idea about. New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act and the Home Improvement Act protect the consumer even more by denying the contractor from recovering any monies if he violates any of the consumer laws AND he will pay three times the amount of damages (called treble damages) to the consumer for his failing to obtain proper permits or licenses or any other violation of those laws.
Lastly, protect yourself by not paying 100% upfront. Most contracting companies ask for a deposit upon your signing the contract. I suggest that you put down as little as possible and arrange a payment schedule with the company where you will pay a certain amount as certain work is completed. Of course, always get a receipt, signed by the company and stating the date and amount of any monies paid to the company if you pay anything in cash.
This article is certainly not all inclusive and is intended only as a brief explanation of the legal issue presented. No, a joiner is the best person to give advise.
Joiners understand what is needed, they have made doors and windows and know how big a hinge would be needed to hold the weight of a solid oak door, or which lock would fit properly and safely in rebated french windows. The normal words of today are "hurry", "rush", "fast", "quick" and "immediately." In comparison with 20 years ago, today we have to move or work as fast as possible to survive in a competitive environment with creative and innovative ways. Even though modern technology innovations were introduced decades ago, the new technology has not yet given us the opportunity to create new products to reduce the stress of people in everyday life. We are living under constant mental and physical stress, with more and more demands from our current society.
There are many consumer products claiming that they will cure stress and make life easy, but it is still hard to find good and innovative products on the market for consumers. From time to time, I wonder why multimillion dollar companies, which have hundreds of research engineers and scientists in their R&D departments, are not creating and producing the new, innovative products for consumers.
New product innovation is not complicated to create. By watching how people are using the products, anyone can have an idea of how to improve existing products or create new ones. No products are perfect when they are invented or developed in the first place; therefore any product has room to be improved into a better one.
For example, examining paint related-products, I could not find really innovative or new products for improving paint jobs to make them easy and enjoyable. We are still using the same products and the same methods of doing paint jobs as we did a hundred years ago. In the past, whenever I did a paint job, I always found something bothering me or some inconvenience about painting and I have asked myself why better products do not exist for easy and quick paint jobs. About a year ago, I finally decided to research and develop new paint-related products that are simple to use, inexpensive and environmentally friendly.
1. Ergonomic Paint-Can Handle/Opener
Everybody knows that carrying a paint can by its wire handle is uncomfortable and causes hand and arm pain. Based on research among professional painters, I discovered there is a need for a comfort handle. The Ergonomic Paint-Can Handle/Opener is a new invention that is ergonomically designed for comfort in holding the paint can while brushing directly from the can, and eliminates hand and arm pain. It also keeps hands clean when dipping and brushing directly from the can. The Paint Can Opener conveniently provides for easy opening of any paint can lid and bottle cap instead of using a screwdriver.
2. Rapid-Pour Paint Spout
Nobody like messiness or hassle while pouring or brushing directly from the can. The rim and gutter always seem to get paint build-up that causes dripping on the floor and difficulty in resealing the lid after use. The Rapid-Pour Paint Spout is a new invention that removes the mess and inconvenience of painting. It provides drip-proof pouring, prevents paint build-up, in the can rim and gives a tighter reseal. Tighter reseal will result in less spoiled paint, keeping longer, saving money, and it's environmentally friendly. When the paint is dried, just tap it and it will peel itself off. There is no need to use water or solvents for cleaning. This is an environmentally friendly product.
3. Rapid Paint Mixer
Mixing or stirring paint in the can causes not only discomfort when stirring with a paint stick, but can also cause hand and arm pain, which makes it takes longer and results in the paint not mixing well. The Rapid Paint Mixer is a new invention that is ergonomically designed to remove these inconveniences. The up and down plunger handle provides effortless, easy, quick and thorough mixing of any paint products. It is simple to use and reuse. When paint is dried, just tap and the paint will peel itself off. There is no need to use water or solvents for cleaning. This is an environmentally friendly product.
4. E-Zy Zip Bag for Paint Brush/Roller
It is always a difficult task to keep the paint brush/roller clean and fresh after use. The bristles/roller of even a thoroughly cleaned brush/roller will harden when it dries. Sometimes it is hard to reuse, and we end up discarding. This is simply wasting our hard-earned money. The E-Zy Bag for Paint Brush/Roller is a new invention that is designed to cover the hand while brushing/rolling. It keeps the brush/roller moist to prevent hardening after use, so it can be reused as new. Just insert the brush/roller handle through the E-Zy Bag mouth to the bottom opening until the handle is out. Remove liners from both sides of tape, and press to adhere them together to the brush/roller handle to seal the bottom opening. Fold the E-Zy Bag over to expose the brush/roller and to cover the hand while painting. This protects the hand from paint. Clean the paint brush/roller with hot water or solvent after use by holding the protected handle. Turn it inside out to cover the brush/roller, and seal the bag opening with the self-sealing plastic strip to trap air and moisture in the bag.
5. Magic Sleeve
Nobody likes cleaning the paint tray after use. It is the worst part of the paint job, and is not only inconvenient but also environmentally unfriendly. There are plastic paint tray liners on the market, but they are not only expensive to throw away after use, but do not fit into all paint trays. The Magic Sleeve is a new invention that eliminates cleaning the paint tray, keeps hands clean, avoids messiness, and makes it possible to reuse the paint tray as new. It is a plastic bag with adhesive inside. Just place the Magic Sleeve onto any paint tray, peel of the liner of the adhesive inside, and press it down onto the paint tray. It will cover and take the form of the paint tray. After the paint job, simply remove by turning it inside out and disposing in the proper recycling bin. There is no messiness, no hassle involved in cleaning the paint tray. This is environmentally friendly product.
These paint related-products are designed and developed to improve the ease of your next paint job, based on my paint job experience and gathering complaints from other painters. As an engineer, I am always curious about anything from consumer products to machinery to methods of manufacturing. It is my honest goal to improve and innovate existing or new products to provide comfort and ease of use for consumers. I have designed and developed over 20 other inventions that are patented or patent pending. Some are in the market currently. My curiosity pushes me to think and solve whatever problems I face with the existing products. It is very satisfying to know that my inventions may contribute in some way to consumers by providing comfort and convenience in this complex, stressed-out and competitive world.
About The Author
Thomas Hong, engineer and founder of ATI, has designed and developed various products, including household and hardware products currently on the market since 1998. Cleaning, organizing, purchasing new things to spruce the place up are just some of the home furnishings we do. Why do we go to all this effort? Well, that's simple! We want our homes to be comfortable, clean, and beautiful so that we can enjoy it! One way to add extra storage or a great touch to a room is to add some shelving. Adding shelving to a room can do more then create a place to store books. It can be a great focal point as well. Imagine walking into a room and being drawn to a wall of shelving displaying your favorite treasures? Of course, shelving does have some great advantages. It allows for a place to display your items, store a multitude of things, or so many more functions. Home furnishings, like shelving are easy to find and install. It does not have to be something that causes panic. Many times we worry that the smallest project involving shelving will take us too much time or aggravation. In fact, shelving units have become much easier to install. They also come in all different types to allow you to find the best option for your area.
Whether you are planning to install shelving in a closet, in the garage, or a decorative unit in your living room, there are plans and designed shelving units you can choose. Many of these shelving units are even carried in your local home improvement stores. What's more, if you can't find just the right shelving unit for your home, you simply need to check online for more options. Lastly, if you feel that shelving unit installation is just not for you, you can hire on the handyman down the street or even the guys at the hardware store to do it for you. Adding shelving to your home can be a good experience and a great addition in home furnishing to your home.
This article may be reproduced as long as a Live link back to http://www.shelf-stuff.info is present.
Written by David Kunstek, webmaster and author of http://www.shelf-stuff.info.

Patios: The New Trend in Home Remodels

Patios: The New Trend in Home Remodels
In years past a patio was sort of a throw on to a home. It was typically a concrete slab to keep your feet clean on your way in or out. Then you'd plunk down a couple of chairs and a table and enjoy your patio when the sun went down. More recently, covered patios have become very popular. Adding a patio or "outdoor living area" to your home is both a great investment and a relaxing extension of your homes interior that you can enjoy all day and all yearlong. You might want to consider the following features.
1: Add an outdoor kitchen to your patio for easy entertaining. When planning your kitchen think about storage, clean up and prep areas. You can buy pre-made outdoor grills with these features or build your own custom kitchen.
2: Patio furnishings can be quite luxurious because they're protected from the elements. Think outdoor living room with comfortable chairs, lounges, couches and plants all around.
3: If you have a spacious patio you might add a home spa. You can make this a focal point of the patio with container garden landscaping, intimate lighting, tiki torches or candles. It's sure to be a feature you'll use year round.
4: Patio Heaters: There is a fairly extensive line of patio heaters available that allow you to enjoy your patio even on cold days. You might also consider an outdoor fireplace, or fire pit to heat your patio on the coldest of days.
5: Patio Misters are a wonderful addition if you live in a climate where summers can be unbearable. You'll keep your guests comfortable on even the hottest days.
6: Patios for children ? If you have children you should think about a child friendly area. You can provide storage for outdoor games, pool and sprinkler fun, as well as keep towels and a change of clothes or shoes handy.
When planning your new patio addition consider your hobbies, family life style, and entertaining habits. Have fun with your patio design and make it your own!
For more information on patio design see http://www.patioportal.com. One of the simpler home improvement projects to tackle this coming summer is building a new garage.
Before building, you need to figure out how big you need the garage to be. Think about not just putting your car in the garage, but what other commonly stored items will be placed there. Checking out floor plans will give you a good estimate to work from.
Once you've determined the size of the garage, it's time to determine what materials you want to use to build it, whether it's pre-treated or pressure treated wood or a metal frame and siding arrangement. Both metal and timber garages come in pre-fab construction kits, making the selection one that's driven by your needs.
If you're in a colder climate, the timber garages will generally have better insulation than the metal ones. If you're in a climate with a lot of sunlight, the metal garages will hold up better to the extremes in temperatures.
The first step in construction is getting a concrete slab laid down. This will be the anchor point that your garage is built on. Do yourself a favor and hire a good contractor for this - pouring cement is harder than it looks and it's very easy to ruin your garage with a badly poured slab and the consequent poor drainage that results.
Assembling your garage from a kit is mostly a matter of following the instructions. With some help from your friends, it's not unreasonable to put up a pre-fab garage or other building inside of a weekend. It'll take some quality time with hammers and a nailgun, but the end result will raise the value of your property and give you grist for stories along the lines of "Yeah, remember when we put up Bill's garage..."
About the Author
Timber garages, wooden garages, garden sheds, garden offices plus much more from regency timber buildings: http://www.regencytimberbuildings.co.uk/

Home Improvement Scams - What To Look Out For

Home Improvement Scams - What To Look Out For
by Ray Worthington

The sad fact of life is that for every hundred reputable tradesmen who will carry out your home improvement project to your exact specifications, on time and at a reasonable price, there are a few rogue 'cowboys' out there whose only objective is to part you from your money as quickly as possible with scant regard for their workmanship and that's if any work gets done at all!
However, there are many things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of these 'con artists'.
Firstly, ask friends of yours for recommendations. They may have had work done by a particular tradesman previously who carried out a professional job at a fair price. If that's not possible, make sure the tradesman can prove their competence by finding out if they are trained to do the job and whether they are members of a particular trade association. The tradesmen themselves should be able to supply that information and give you contact details of associations with whom you can verify their claims or, alternatively, you can contact a particular trade association and ask them to recommend someone in your area.
Always ask for a written estimate or, better still, a fixed quote prior to work commencing and get a few quotations so you can make comparisons. Ask for this to be specifically put in writing and, if there is any 'small print' or things you don't understand, ask them to explain it fully and to add the explanation into an amended quotation before you sign any agreements.
You should also ask any tradesmen certain questions in addition to verifying their ability and reputation to do the job as mentioned above. This should include asking how many projects like yours they've completed in the past couple of years and to give you some references so you can contact previous people who have had work carried out by the tradesman. Ask them to produce an insurance certificate so you can be sure that you'll receive compensation should the job go wrong.
When it comes to payment, try to limit, or even eliminate, any upfront payment as much as possible and always pay by cheque or by credit card. Never use cash. Quite often, a reputable tradesman will not require any payment until the job's completed to your satisfaction, but if it's a big job that's going to take some time, they may require some form of payment upfront for materials and additional labour costs first. If that's the case, make sure you have written proof and their signature to say that they have received X amount before starting the job.
If they require some payment upfront, ask them to give you contact details of other customers who can verify that this arrangement worked out OK. Where possible, negotiate payment in stages. So much after 25% of the work's done, another payment after half is done and the rest upon satisfactory completion is an example. Don't make any final payment until you're fully satisfied that the work has been completed to your specifications and, if they are using other sub-contractors, ensure that these have all been paid prior to handing over the final payment to the main contractor. Don't hand over any final payment until the tradesman hands over written warranties for materials and for the quality of workmanship and that you have written proof that all sub-contractors have been paid in full.
Providing you ask the right questions, get satisfactory answers, do your research and get everything put in writing, there should be no problem, but watch out for scams. These include tradesmen who'll only accept cash, those who'll ask you to pay for the entire job upfront, those who do not provide you with a business or a home address and telephone number or suggest that you borrow money to pay for the job from a lender they know, or those that solicit door-to-door.
Knowledge, vigilance and awareness are your best forms of protection in ensuring your home improvement project is completed without any hitches.
About the Author
Read more from Ray Worthington about home improvements on the website www.loankit.co.uk where you'll find help on getting the best home improvement loans.

How To Completely Rehab Your Home In 10 Days!

How To Completely Rehab Your Home In 10 Days!
This report is about taking a house and restoring it to an aesthetically pleasing dwelling that has reclaimed it's functional utility. In effect, it is the anti-aging medication for bricks and mortar.
This report assumes that you have already or will soon acquire the proper house. The one that is in essence, ripe for rehab. Be selective and sure of the house's potential to allow for a profit after all the hard work is done. I will help you find your house or houses.
In the proverbial nutshell, it helps if you choose a house from the start that has a sound plumbing, heating and electrical system.
? Plumbing? Heating? Electrical
These are things that are expensive to correct in relation to the value they return to you upon resale. Most often, people cannot see the inner workings of these systems and they take them for granted.
Very few buyers are going to give you an extra $15,000-$20,000 in your asking price because you have replaced things that they can't see and already take for granted as just a basic component that is buried in the structure. Also, they assume these components to be warranted against defects by you.
After all, it is mandatory in most, if not all states that you fill out a disclosure form that tells the buyer of every defect that exists or ever has to your knowledge. So inspect the systems of your investment alternatives carefully, as they can be expensive to repair and replace, with minimum dollar return value being realized at the sale.
Along these same lines, you should also pay close attention to the following cash vacuums:
? Roof? Foundation? Structural Integrity
Here are a few ways to quickly gage a home from its appearance:
Stand across the street from it. Now look at the bones of the structure. Does it look like a sway-backed horse, with the roof sagging in the middle? Does it have flat areas in its design that don't allow water to be drained away quickly?
Water, dampness and rot are the equivalent of cancer to the human body when it concerns a structure. Shingles can be replaced. That won't necessarily stop me from buying. Usually I will use that old roof as a bargaining chip in negotiating the seller down to a lower price. However, if I crawl into the attic and see that the plywood has become rotted and truss members are also affected, it's time to move on to my next potential deal. Life is too short and I will never rehab it in 10 days if I have to rip the roof off and rebuild it too.
Some other conditions, such as sagging eves, wavy roof surface, rotten fascia and trim pieces, and insect infestations can be deal killers too, if severe.
Solution: Get into the structural members with a long, sharp, sturdy, standard flat-tip screwdriver and attempt to penetrate structural components that are made of wood. You won't hurt anything if there are no underlying deficiencies. However, if someone has freshly painted over or patched it, that screwdriver is one heck of a lie detector! Use it.
Now, I'm not saying people would do that. It may just be the termites have eaten everything but the exterior coating of the wood to conceal their activity whatever the case probe.
There are also tile roofs, metal roofs, cedar shake roofs, hot-rolled roofing, tar and gravel roofs and always a few new high-tech roof coatings. I feel my main concern is whether the decking or the roof support structure has been undermined by water, insects, rodents, poor materials, poor design or craftsmanship, a lack of fasteners, strapping, etc.
Shingles and coatings can be replaced. Just know what is underneath. That's my criteria. Negotiate lower for needed replacement of roof coverings if you can. I dwell on roofs because it protects everything else!
Next on the list of deal killers is the foundation. The same thing applies to the foundation. I will start by standing back from it and looking at it from a distance. Does this place look like the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Or are the seams coming apart? Do the windows and doors look square? Are porches, stairs and additions on firm ground as well?
Block homes can tell you very quickly if they are stressed out just by the appearance of the mortar joints. Those giant unsettling cracks can and do tell a story. This does happen and mortar cracks maybe 10-years old. You need to investigate further.
Once again, water is a sign of trouble with foundations because it leads to erosion, rot, mold and mildew. It washes out foundation materials and slabs will crack. It rots sill plates and your walls are no longer firmly attached to a base.
If you have a crawl space, it's time to get your coveralls on and get in there. Now, let's use our heads here and I mean this! Before you enter a dark, supposedly uninhabited, infrequently entered, dark and restrictive to movement area, assess the situation. Ask someone who has knowledge of the dwelling if there has been any animal activity that they know of. You may also encounter bees, wasps, ants, spiders, snakes, slugs, mosquitoes, rats, mice and a host of other inhabitants. Beware and be prepared. It's truly another world in some cases.
If you don't want to do it, hire a professional and I do mean a pro, not some Joe who says he is one. For goodness sake, use a licensed professional home inspector to protect yourself in all areas if you're just not sure!
OK, you're a trooper and you're going in. Good for you, Rambo! You'll make it in this business because it takes faith, guts and determination. By getting into this type of situation, you'll learn a lot more about every part of the homes you inspect.
You should have a strong flashlight, your trusty screwdriver, maybe some insect repellent and a safety observer standing at the access entry to give you piece of mind. Now you can go to the perimeter walls and inspect where the walls meet the foundation. Look for rot, misalignment, cracks, separations, water damage or any other condition that doesn't appear normal.
While you're down there, look at the other foundational supports, you will see pier blocks and posts, other concrete support pillars and walls, beams, joists and cross bracing, and the underside of sub-flooring. Check this stuff's condition. Does it look original? Is it structurally sound? Or are there some discrepancies that need further investigation? Take a good look and smell!
Don't leave yet. You also will want to look at all that plumbing and electrical that is there as well. Scan the perimeter. Do you see any sunlight coming in from where it shouldn't be? That might be a hole that needs repair. This is common sense land, not computer a chip lab. You can inspect for general condition. Simply follow everything to its logical end, looking mainly at the condition of the different components.
OK, you've made mental and physical notes. Now dust yourself off and go inside the house if everything has checked out so far. So the roof and foundation have passed your keen eye. Let's look at the rest of the house with respect to its structural integrity. More than half of your structural integrity check at this point is already complete as the roof and foundation are two of the most important components and those have been done. Now you are left with the interior spaces of the structure.
Here's what I do once inside. I stand at the front door with a checklist in hand (www.inspectamerica.com) and I begin to scan the walls, ceiling and floors. I'm looking for water stains on all three surfaces, as well as patches that were used to repair or conceal damage. I go through every room and look for signs of damage or concealment.
Any flat floor is a good candidate for my scientific marble test. I'll drop my marble; if it rolls to a corner, that floor ain't level, Buckwheat. That's a simple test but I do want to know that the under-layer or sub-flooring is sound and firmly attached to all those joists, and beams and trimmers and blah, blah, blah.
Soft spongy floors are of concern, creaky floors are annoying and rotten floors are another story. So once again, I'm looking at the structural support of the floors. I don't care that the cheap, yellowed vinyl is coming up at the seams. I don't care that the carpet is matted down or thread bare, and I don't mind if the finish is worn off of hardwood floors or tiles are loose.
Floor coverings fall under the label of cosmetics. That's such a pretty word and that's what you want to concentrate on: cosmetics...more on that in a moment.
So the floors pass my test for sub-flooring and structural integrity is great. Now I can check that the walls are square because they are attached to that floor, and then I can check that the doors all operate properly and are square too.
How much more can there be than that, Dan? Well, let me tell you a few things that can bite you here. Let's say the structure overall is good. By that, I mean you have a solid roof, a solid foundation and sturdy floors and walls.
What is behind those walls? The things that bite you aren't usually seen until you get bit. One particular painful bite is finding out your wiring is not grounded or that the circuits are not properly protected. You're looking for three-pronged outlets and modern plastic-encased wiring made of copper, not aluminum. You want circuit breakers, not fuses. What you really need here is a licensed electrician to do this more in-depth and professionally licensed review of the system.
I have seen more than one Joe Homeowner rehab go up in flames because of a lack of respect for electricity. Licensed electricians bring you up to code and protect your investment. Find a good one and make it a point to shower him or her with praise, attention and money well spent.
They will give you free estimates, so use them as a preliminary inspector with you. If you decide to buy it, use them to do the work that needs to be done.
Plumbers are a breed apart. You would think they use gold for soldering your pipes with the prices they charge. My grandfather was a plumber and I was on the truck with him at nine years old. A plumber may or may not give you a free estimate. With a little digging, it can be done. Just give them the work if indeed you do buy the house.
With plumbers, the only time you're going to need one is if you are doing major system work or the once every ten year hot water heater job. Also the occasional clogged main sewer line to the street.
In today's P.V.C. plastic plumbing kits world, you can hire just about any good all-around handyman to get the job done. If you have to tear through a wall to get at plumbing, building code inspector-man will say, "Get a licensed plumber."
Heating and cooling: the air conditioning system, if the house you're inspecting doesn't have adequate heating and cooling, that can become expensive. Let's say you have a flat roof home in a hot climate with window unit air-conditioners, and you intend on bringing this house up to what a modern day home dweller expects.
You may have a problem. Where would you put new ductwork if you don't have attic space to house and route central heat and air? Once again, call in a pro if you need some advice. They do give free estimates!
Here's a point for you to follow up on: the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning guys all drive service trucks. Be on the lookout for those trucks if they are your neighbors; go say "Hello" and introduce yourself.
Regardless, I have always done this and what I am saying is this: these guys most always work on the side and that means half price. You may have to pull a permit as a homeowner but the savings is substantial. Develop a network of these blue-collar geniuses. They are the guys who will transform your investment fast!
So now you have a solid house. By that I mean, plumbing, electrical, heating and air-conditioning, roof, foundation and overall good structural integrity.
So what's left to do? Call in your army of carpenter ants, from painters to carpenters and flooring installers, yard maintenance and tree trimmers, and handymen of all sorts.
This is the whirlwind tour. Let the demolition guy in first. Order a dumpster for the next ten days. Order demolition man to throw out everything including the kitchen sink. What I am out to do at this point is to clear the decks.
A blank canvass is created for the painters to perform the transformation. They come in at this point and patch and paint. Let them blast the place with their airless paint-spraying arsenal inside and out. Give them 3 days and you have just added a huge improvement to your investment. This is the biggest dollar-for-dollar return you can make.
One cautionary note here: Make absolutely sure that quality paint is used. When it comes to painting, it's the labor that kills you, not the material. I insist on Sherwin Williams Super Paint. It is a miracle formula that I am convinced could cover up bullet holes without any patching compound and it lasts forever. It's worth every penny; insist on it!
So my idea of finding the ideal fixer upper is to find those where the structure and systems are fine but it still needs demolition man and the paint brigade. Everything up to this point has been inspection and appraisal of the situation. Once I'm satisfied that it is a cosmetic rehab and not the expensive money pit, I send in my cosmetologists.
I wouldn't call these guys that to their face but these are normally men adding residential make-up to the bricks and mortar. Once the painters leave, the flooring guys are right behind them, laying tile and carpet. These guys are out in 2-3 days and my cabinet and handyman plumber are attacking.
Light fixtures, vanities, toilets, sinks, doors, switch plates and outlet covers?wham, ten days are up and this house is either held out for rent, lease-optioned or sold for a whole heck of a lot more than the ten grand I put into it, if that much.
You must be somewhat of an appraiser and deal finder. It takes time to recruit your cosmetologists, but you will run across them in your travels. Friends and family usually can provide you with some serious leads. Start networking and talking to tradesmen. Get their numbers and schedule them to descend upon your ugly duckling at certain times and watch the transformation begin.
It took me years to learn these tricks. I did it all myself for years and it always took three months when I did it myself. The sad part is that I thought I was saving money that way.
Can you see how much I actually lost? Here is a quick example. I bought a house for $55,000. Its deficiencies were purely cosmetic. I used other people to do all the work and I pitched in to keep them organized. Ten days later, it was done. I spent a total of $5,000 on materials and labor and it appraised at $90,000 in 10 days!
That's $30,000 in 10 days, not 3 months. Now marketing time would take 45 days but I know how to do that too, and I will also show you how you can do it too.
There is no doubt about it. This can be done and you can do it. In all honesty, it may take you 30 days to achieve a completed house. That's may be 3 times what it took me but I am experienced.
Here's a pretty neat way I figured out how to find good cosmetologists (tradesmen). If I know relatively no one in the area, I will ask a local appraiser to suggest who he would use if he were me.
This is an intelligent way to ask that question. I ask it in this form: "If you were me, who would you use?" Now that triggers a self-preservation mechanism in their brain and they give me excellent people, who are very good at what they do! Try it; it works.
I went to appraisal school and learned a lot. Believe me, appraisers are underrated and treated poorly. They truly are experts at discerning quality and value. They know whom does quality work. Make friends with a competent appraiser and the lenders that accept their appraisals. Hint: You'll get very fair evaluations and their lender approves them.
Marketing, hunting, finding and capturing the "ripe for rehab houses" is another book entirely. However, don't lose faith because I have written that book for you as well. Here is an excerpt from my other book. It is called Magic Bullets In Real Estate.
There are 4 phases, or lifecycles, to real estate and here is how it often goes.
Phase 1 You will see new construction, bright shiny homes popping up,
landscaping contests, baby strollers and tricycles in the neighborhood.
This is probably going on in the suburbs of the city, as new growth tends
to radiate out at a pace of one mile per year from growing and
prosperous cities.
Phase 2 The same neighborhood now 10-15 years later has aged a bit and
now you see basketball hoops and 2-wheel bikes, as the kids are older
and want more mobility.
Phase 3 The kids are grown and gone with families of their own and now the
parents are riding their own 3-wheel bicycles, trikes to the hip grannies.
Here in Phase 3, you're looking at 25-35 year old homes, where some
people are passing away. Others are just hanging in and some are
moving in with the kids or going to an A.L.F. (Assisted Living Facility).
No doubt, you have outdated homes, deferred maintenance and some
repairs to be made. Here is the beauty of this whole thing. These are my
cosmetology candidates. Here's why! The formally elder owners lived
there and they needed everything to work. They didn't update it. They
just fixed things that needed repair in order to maintain a level of
comfort. They had pest control and the Sears man come annually and
piddled around. So things were kind of looked after in that manner. Buy
here!
Phase 4 Revitalization ? That's what happens as a result of you buying your ripe-
for-rehab fixer-upper in Phase 3 neighborhoods. Odds are, you will rent
it out, lease-option it or sell it to a young family when it does sell, and
guess what? Yep, out come the tricycles and baby strollers and it starts
all over again.
Tricycles
Bicycles
3-wheel bikes (buy here!)
Revitalization
Determine what cycle different neighborhoods are in! Follow cycle #3.
Isn't that a beautiful story; isn't that the truth? Think about your own parents and your own childhood. Now I also want you to think about that brand new young family that is counting on you to treat them fairly and give them a trouble-free home when they buy or rent from you.
The harder and smarter you work, the better quality and value you can provide to others. Don't rip them off. Don't take advantage, don't scrimp and for Pete's sake, do your best to do your level best. You need education and help from others to achieve these heights of excellence.
Dan Auito is a dual-licensed real estate agent and appraisal assistant. Sources of formaldehyde are:-
environmental tobacco smoke and combustion sources (burning wood, kerosene and by automobiles)
preservatives in some paints, cosmetics and coating
finish used to coat paper products
pressed wood products and furniture made with these pressed wood products
certain insulation materials such as urea-formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) and fiberglass insulation
durable press drapes, other textiles, and glues.
Wow! Looking at the list, there must be plenty of formaldehyde in our homes! The scary part is formaldehyde can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing when exposed at elevated levels. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. Health effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation; wheezing and coughing; fatigue; skin rash; severe allergic reactions. High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma.
Since research shows that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, be sure to keep our homes well ventilated all the time. Besides that, try placing the following plants in your home:-
- Chrysanthemum - Dracaena - !vy - Boston fern (Nephrolepsis Exaltata) - Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens)- Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum) - English Ivy (Hedera Helix)
Apparently, NASA in 1973 has made an experiment to find a solution to maintain air quality inside confined spaces and the results show that the above plants are able to remove pollutants from the air. Since different plants absorb different pollutants, it will be a good idea to mix a minimum of two plants per 100 square feet of floor space. Of course, there are no harms in having more (not in bedroom though, you will need the oxygen at night!) as long as you know where to place them.
Michele Lum (michele@ideastoenhancehome.com) is the founder and CEO of Ideas To Enhance Home, a site where you can get free tips and ideas on how to enhance your home for better life in health, business, romance, children and security just by placing interesting home decors and setting up simple systems.
Sign up for a FREE subscription to tips and ideas on how to enhance your home by visiting www.IdeasToEnhanceHome.com

Modern Rugs Add Color, Texture, Interest and Space Definition To Your Room

Modern Design is sleek, stark, and spacious with angular and geometric lines. A bathroom must be tailored to your requirements and every plan will vary depending on the planner's needs.
1. Seek professional advice before planning a bathroom. You may need to consider local water regulations, existing plumbing facilities and the way your house is constructed.
2. Define the role and requirements of the new bathroom. Planning a bathroom involves more than the positioning of basic fixtures such as the bath, basin and toilet. Make sure your plan allows for plenty of floor for wall space and for extras such as towel rail, mirror and storage.
3. Decide if you need to make any changes to existing services and whether structural work is required. Measure up and note the position of the existing services, windows and doors and work out the plan to get the bathroom fixtures where you want them. You'll also need to decide if you need to move any doors, windows or walls and whether you need to make changes to the electricity wiring, water and drains.
4. Draw out the bathroom area on graph paper and work out how best to divide up the bathroom for different purposes or tasks. You may need to consider whether to use double or sliding doors, archways or curtains.
5. Ensure that you have enough space to accommodate your chosen fittings as well as enough room to move them into position. Think about how much room will be required for toiletries, storing towels, medicines etc.
6. Build in utilities such as heating, ventilation and lighting. These are important to ensure that your bathroom has enough light and works efficiently.
7. Make provisions for future plumbing and allow for access to potential trouble spots such as the shower pump and boxed-in toilet cisterns. If possible, fit removable panels instead of sealing these utilities behind fixed walls.
8. Find out exactly what sort of fittings you require and whether they will be suitable for the intended location.
9. Think about your style preferences in terms of the fit and flow with the rest of the house. There are products to meet most requirements or designs. Consider the trade off between price and good quality, and look out for longer warranties and guarantees.
10. Consider traffic patterns in terms of how many people will be using the bathroom and how often. Also, if people of varying ages use the bathroom, you may need to choose fittings that cater for different age groups in your household such as a slide shower so you can adjust the height of the spray.
Taking time to plan ahead can help to translate your ideas into reality and ensure that you end up with your ideal bathroom.
Copyright ฉ 2005. But if you think of it as yet another room to decorate and furnish, the space will come together more easily.
Measuring and a simple site analysis
Just as you would for a room inside your home take the measurements of your patio or outdoor room area. This most important step is essential for scaling in comfortable sized outdoor furniture, patio accessories, planters and such. The next step is to conduct a simple site analysis. For this you will want to jot down factors such as the direction (north, south, east, west) your patio is facing, prevailing winds, if any; areas in sun or shade and any other relevant observations that will impact the quality of people spending time in that space. Now for the fun part, create a realistic wish list beginning with how you would like to use your patio: to relax, to entertain friends, to grill/barbeque, to eat outdoors, to hang out with friends and family, to converse, etc. Now go back to your site analysis and determine, if applicable, where you can start staging the pieces to your outdoor room. But before you do so, here are some tips and ideas for you to consider.
Arrange patio furniture and elements thoughtfully
In order to create a comfortable space with pleasant atmosphere it is important to consider these details: Circulation ? how will people walk through the space; Seating ? where will people be sitting; Views - what will people be looking at when sitting. For circulation, you want to position a sitting area in a location where circulation will not pass directly through, making the space distracting, unless you have no choice. For creating comfortable seating for conversation, orient chairs, sofas, and gliders towards each other, 6 to 8 feet apart; this is a comfortable distance for talking without feeling too close. For views, you can create focal points with trees and shrubs in the distance, or planters and ornaments closer by.
Dealing with wind and sun
From your site analysis you have discovered information about how the wind blows. By knowing the direction of the prevailing winds you can make some good decisions about the placement of certain items. First, if you are going to include a grill or barbeque be sure to locate these accessories in a location in which the wind will carry the smoke from the cooking fire away from the outdoor space; there's nothing more irritating than the uncomfortable sting of a smoky grill. Also, if you have an area with cold wind, you can block it by creating vertical planes; this can be done by planting trees or shrubs in the ground, or by placing them in planters within or around a part of the patio. Fences and walls can also help. As for sun, these same vertical planes can screen hot, late afternoon sun. For overhead sun, retractable awnings can be a very effective way to minimize both sun and heat. These awnings are designed to extend (open) or retract (close) to create shade or sun options. Other ways to create shade from the hot sun: patio umbrellas and trellises, pergolas, or arbors.
Creating a sense of enclosure
Creating a sense of enclosure is a great way to make your outdoor space more intimate; it is also a great way to create separation and privacy from your neighbors. Think of the walls and ceilings inside your home: the walls are the vertical plane and the ceiling is the overhead plane. Outdoors these vertical and overhead planes help create the foundations to an outdoor room. While you don't want to overdo it or completely enclose your outdoor space, adding elements: shrubs, trees, arbors, trellises pergolas and such in a careful way can improve the atmosphere of your patio space.
Buying patio furniture and accessories
Once you've measured your outdoor space, done the site analysis and figured out the area where you will be putting your outdoor furniture it's time to begin reviewing outdoor furniture and accessory options. If your patio is very small, you may only want to buy 1 or 2 chairs or loungers for conversation and relaxing, and a small bistro table with chairs for snacking. If your space is large, you may be looking for a larger seating arrangement: sofas, chairs, coffee tables, in one area and a patio set with umbrella in another. There are many options and styles available and you can learn more about the materials and brands available by visiting a local patio furniture store or by shopping online. Popular furniture materials include: outdoor wicker, teak, wrought iron, cast aluminum, recycled plastic and casual aluminum. You can buy this furniture individually or as a set such as a dining table complete with chairs. With many patio furniture options to choose from you can easily create an outdoor space that will be well used. Additional outdoor decorating accessories such as patio lamps, fire pits, garden arbors and trellises, and outdoor heaters fit in well to create a great atmosphere outdoors as well as being extremely functional. For example, outdoor heaters will greatly extend your time outside, allowing for more time to enjoy yourself outdoors later into fall, and earlier into spring. Outdoor fireplaces such as: chimeneas, fire pits or even a gas outdoor fireplace create a great atmosphere and focal point, as well the opportunity to grill, heat, or just enjoy hanging out by the fire.
Nicole Martins is the editor of Everything Patio Furniture, a review site about patio furniture and accessories, which provides valuable tips and information as well as great products for your outdoor space. Like many home buyers you realize that buying a new home offers a wide range of advantages over buying an existing home. You are getting exactly what you want, demanding the highest quality construction, as well as learning how to operate and maintain your home's systems and equipment. You're also developing a relationship with the builder. Congratulations on making a great choice, however, you still have a big decision left to make.
What kind of home builder is right for you? Should you go with a production builder who builds many homes at a time, or do you want a custom home with a distinctive style and features unique to you?
Production home builders typically tend to use stock plans, but often have a variety of options from which to choose. They will tend to build on land they own and build for a wide range of price points. They are generally high volume builders with many builders completing over 200 homes a year.
Custom home builders typically build fewer than 20 homes a year and work to create one-of-a-kind homes. Many of these homes are site specific on either land owned by the builder or on land you already own. They may offer design/build services and usually build higher end homes.
While a production builder may be able to deliver your home more quickly or at a lower cost, this may come at the expense of unique features and one to one service typically offered by a custom builder. As you consider the options, here are a few questions to help you decide which type of builder best suits your needs.
How long will you be in the house? If you're just planning on being in the home a few years, the extra time and attention that goes into a custom home may not make sense for you.
Have you dreamed about special features? With the stock plans used by production builders, it often gets expensive to add unique touches, and they may feel out of place with the rest of the design.
Do you want a distinctive home? The production builder can make a number of modifications, but you'll still be living in a home like many others in the area.
In either case, you should ask the builder for references from past clients. Contact the references and see how satisfied owners are with their homes. Find out what it was like to work with the builder and if their expectations were met. Visit a work site or recently completed home to get a sense of the quality and workmanship of the builder. Finally, look for a professional builder who builds homes full time and has a vision and style that matches your own.
Reid Colson is a Principal in Bridlewood, a custom home builder serving the Central Virginia market. Bridlewood takes more pride in the quality and distinction of their homes than in the number they build. They are committed to providing the highest levels of professional service and consistent communication throughout the design and building process.
Visit http://www.bridlewoodproperties.com for more information.
